Here are all the first-time NHL and NBA champions since 1967...

NHL:

1974 - Philadelphia Flyers

1980 - New York Islanders

1984 - Edmonton Oilers

1989 - Calgary Flames

1991 - Pittsburgh Penguins

1995 - New Jersey Devils

1996 - Colorado Avalanche

1999 - Dallas Stars

2004 - Tampa Bay Lightning

2006 - Carolina Hurricanes

2007 - Anaheim Ducks

2012 - Los Angeles Kings

2018 - Washington Capitals

2019 - St. Louis Blues

NBA:

1970 - New York Knicks

1971 - Milwaukee Bucks

1977 - Portland TrailBlazers

1978 - Washington Bullets

1979 - Seattle SuperSonics

1989 - Detroit Pistons

1991 - Chicago Bulls

1994 - Houston Rockets

1999 - San Antonio Spurs

2006 - Miami Heat

2011 - Dallas Mavericks

2016 - Cleveland Cavaliers

2019 - Toronto Raptors

So the only overlaps in the last 50+ years were in 1989, 1991, 1999, 2006, and 2019.

There are 11 teams in each league still seeking their first championship (excluding WHA and ABA titles). In order of senority:

NHL: Buffalo, Vancouver, Arizona, San Jose, Ottawa, Florida, Nashville, Winnipeg, Columbus, Minnesota, Vegas

NBA: Phoenix, LA Clippers, Utah, Brooklyn, Denver, Indiana, New Orleans, Orlando, Minnesota, Memphis, Charlotte

Interestingly, both the NBA and NHL crowned a first time champion this year. That doesn't happen all that often, but I'm not yet fully cognizant of when NHL teams won championships, and while I could look it up, I'm much more interested in pondering if my first sport, NASCAR, will also have a first time champion this year. It happened last year, but it would be really cool to have it all in one. Although the NHL and NBA seasons both started before the 2018 NASCAR season ended...

Very glad the Raptors won it. I've been following them since 1999 and adopted them as my 'East Coast Team' ... since Sonics games were hardly ever aired on channels in Europe due to the time difference. Seen many, many games of them since...many bad ones too... but now...victory is sweet!

Managed to attend 3 'real games' and one of them was in Toronto. Such an awesome crowd and city. Love it (except for the cold weather)...this is fantastic for Canadian sports. Now comes the hardest part: keeping on top!

And I can only wonder what the Indiana Pacers are thinking now after picking Kawhi 15th in the 2011 draft and then trading him to the Spurs that very same day... Oooops? Now if he decides to put down roots in Canada maybe a repeat next year. Also just read the possibility of KD missing the entire next season it will be interesting to see what happens during the offseason.

The number of star players who were traded away by the teams that drafted them before playing a single game is pretty remarkable. (And could make for a good user list.) Just off the top of my head: Bill Russell, Dominique Wilkins, Byron Scott, Mark Price, Scottie Pippen, Chris Webber and Penny Hardaway (traded for each other), Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter, Kawhi Leonard, Rudy Gobert, Donavan Mitchell, Kyle Kuzma, Luka Doncic and Trae Young (traded for each other). And I believe Wilkins was the only case of a player forcing a trade by refusing to report to the team that selected him. The rest were entirely voluntary actions of the GMs.

I've got Monday booked off work. I'm a bit outside of the city, so I'll be sure to head down super-early. Can't wait!!

I also just pre-ordered an over-priced Panini NBA Champions commemorative set because I apparently take leave of my senses when my teams finally win.

Congrats to Raptors fans. I remember the Rockets first championship to end the '93-'94 season, and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried.

Enjoy the feeling. Milk it as long as you can. Do what DanD did and commemorate it somehow. That's what sports is supposed to be.

Joshua, I'm surprised you aren't taking credit, what with you just making a trip to Canada right as they win their only NBA championship. ------------------------------- I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
