Gossip or not, I like your insight and interest in everything you mentioned. I heard about Vince selling a bunch of stock but didn't read further into it. If he does want to create a new football league, he has plenty of talent in the WWE that isn't being used correctly and many of them are former football players. The XFL actually produced a handful of players that ended up in the NFL after the XFL folded. First in my mind is Rod Smart. He was known as "He Hate Me" in the XFL and played several positions for the Panthers. He was the kick/punt return man for a couple of years and also played as RB, FB, TE, and was a gunner on special teams. If Vince wants to make a new football league, it's not hard to pick up anyone not drafted by NFL teams and also add draftees as they get cut in July and August. Having use of stadiums for those games and proper advertising for them could be enough to make a profit without having a broadcast contract.
Talking networks, no chance that Vince could get a rival league to the NFL aired on ANY major network! CBS, FOX, NBC and ESPN already air NFL games on a weekly basis. ABC and ESPN are owned by Disney. CW doesn't have the money to pay for such a large product and My Network is owned by Fox.
As for what Disney bought from "Fox", it only includes 21st Century Fox (making movies and TV shows) and a few minor connections. Newscorp (aka. Fox broadcasting) keeps all FOX affiliates, MyNetwork stations, cable/satellite stations Fox News, FX, FXX & FXM. Basically, Disney is buying all of 21st Century Fox's buildings and future projects, but none of the current shows and movies produced on the lots. Heck, Fox doesn't even air most of the shows they produce anyway. They sell them to other networks. Just pay attention to the end credits of shows on other networks and you'll see the 21st Century Fox logo at the end of a bunch of them. The recently canceled Tim Allen show "Last Man Standing" that aired on ABC was a Fox product. Several CBS shows are actually made by Fox as well as some of the NBC shows. USA is part of NBC Universal, but they can't air football that isn't NFL at the same time that they are contractually obligated to NASCAR!
There are so many networks that are already locked into sports contracts that a new sport just doesn't have a spot in anyone's lineup right now. WWE has very few options if they don't renew with USA. About the next best option to keep the shows airing at the same time would be to try to get Discovery Communications to air WWE on one of their networks. That's not going to happen. One other option would be Viacom (who owns CBS, MTV, VH1, etc.). Can you seriously see WWE airing on MTV or VH1? Okay, they do also own TBS, TNT, Spike (which becomes the Paramount Network in January) and all of the Nickelodeon channels.
