Is there any chance we could change this name? I'm not a big basketball guy, so the only way I found this PID was by going to the set, clicking the card, then the name, and then I found "Hot Rod Williams". I understand that maybe it's used to differentiate from other John Williams, but it made it confusing enough for me; it could be even worse for a new member. Just thinking out loud (or at least via forum post)!

I thought nicknames were supposed be some sort of sublink not the main name. Unless the nickname was used to identify the player more often than their real name like Babe Ruth he is rarely mentioned as George Herman. Also the name used on the cards should be the PID right? Well sometimes Topps had labeled Roberto Clemente as "Bob" which was rarely used for him.

That's what I thought about nicknames as well. If it's a common name, then I understand (referring to the Babe Ruth example; also thinking about Ichiro in the same boat [I believe Ichiro's PID name is Ichiro]). Maybe because I'm a baseball guy those automatically make sense to me, but not being basketball oriented I missed Hot Rod Williams.

I only saw five of his 100+ cards with "Hot Rod" on them. And all were "John 'Hot Rod' Williams" not just Hot Rod Williams.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

They used to be John Williams and were all jumbled between him, the other John Williams that was in the NBA at the same time, and non-NBA people. Somebody worked hard to correct them, wasn't me and I don't remember who. Take a look at his autographs...they are not signed John. I would hope nobody is going to start changing them to just John because then they will combining his listings with the other guys again, I would bet. I don't change the work people have done in baseball or football because I don't have enough knowledge of those sports, and I would not want to make mistakes in the listings and make it harder to find people.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I did not change anything, so if something is different it wasn't me! :P
In fact, that's the reason I started this thread. I didn't want to change something that shouldn't be changed, especially with my lack of knowledge towards the subject. I was just a little confused is all, especially with the name on the card not being "Hot Rod". I know that we attempt to make this site as user-friendly as possible, so a situation like this might be somewhat confusing to a newer user. It's become second nature for me to not be able to find a card listed somewhere and automatically I head to the set checklist to see what it is linked to, but that came with time.

Not that I'm suggesting doing this for a couple hundred cards, but...
A name can be changed and the radio button can be selected to not change the PID. So all these cards that currently have "Hot Rod Williams" in the name field and are linked to Hod Rod's PID can be changed to "John Williams" but leave the PID for Hot Rod.
This would satisfy both sides as it would show the name on the card and keep it on the Hot Rod PID.
Something to contemplate.

I have been having this very discusion with another member with private messages about this, or at least something extremely similar to this topic. The dicusion started when I noticed he changed the name on this soccer card.
http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/93561/cid/6685027/1994-95-Mundicromo-Sport-Las-Fichas-de-La-Liga---Ultima-Hora-160UH-Prosinecki?PageIndex=1
I originally had it like it is now. He changed it to Robert Prosinecki. And, told me the names on checklists (and therefore the pages the cards are on) should be the propper player's names. I beg to differ. I believe the page that documents that specific card should have the name of the player like it is written on that card. what PID is linked to that card should have the player's correct name. I understand this can open up a big can of worms here. But when it comes to soccer players, there are many that go by names that aren't even remotely similar to their real names. So, this is kind of an important topic.

No, it should be their first and last name on the checklist. Your example even has his full name on the back. Many cards, especially old tobacco cards, only use last names on them.
