My memory is fuzzy here after 16 years... I know there are No Protector cards and refractors inserted in this set. Can these be differentiated from a standard cards with protectors peeled off? I just got a refractor in the mail that has no protector. How can I tell if it was made that way or if it is peeled?

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

That's it Billy. Thanks. I remember now. Since I didn't have a standard card to compare it too, I never would have thought of that.

I don't have either to compare, but I've always wondered the same about the hockey version. I'll have to remember this to check when I do get them.

This is only seven years later...but I'm looking at buying a Tony Gwynn now, and it looks like there is no "R" next to the card number on the "no-protector" refractor version but there is on the protector version. Am I thinking about that correctly?

Here's how those were made: "No Protector" has a refractor back and plain Finest front with no R with the number on the back. "No Protector Refractor" has a refractor front and R with the number on the back. "Refractors" have the cover on the front and the R with the number on the back but are refractors on both sides of the cards. Can anyone tell me that I'm wrong here? Not a challenge or something, just an actual question. I busted a box of these a few years ago and that's what I observed from the break. The cover can be peeled from the front of refractors but they are still not the same as the No-Protector cards.

That's not accurate for the NBA set. I don't know about the other sports, but the No Protector version for the NBA is just basic Finest style on both front and back, and the Refractor is Refractor on front and back.
I just took a look at the Baseball No-Protector Refractor and most of the scans posted are NOT Refractors. This one IS a Refractor, and it appears that it does not carry the R suffix 1998 Finest - No-Protectors Refractors #33 Kevin Orie | Trading Card Database (tcdb.com)
Edit: #70 HAS the R. #33 is clearly a Refractor, so it looks like we may have just discovered an error card.
Edit 2: This set is a mess. There are Refractors without the R but I just found one that is clearly NOT a Refractor yet HAS the R. There are now Release Notes pending to make that clear. There should probably be UER notes on the non-Refractors with the R and the Refractors without it.
Edit 3: There were 34 cards posted into the wrong checklists. There were basic No-Protectors throughout the Refractor checklist, and there were base cards- not parallels at all- in the No-Protector checklist. Several No-Protector Refractors were also in the basic no-Protector non-Refractor checklist also. Once the IRs go through all the cards will be in the right plce.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I see that none of this information is in the Release Notes for each set.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.
