I can hardly believe that it's been 30 years since first began collecting baseball cards. It all started with those green-wrapper packs that hardly changed in design throughout the decade. 40 cents for a pack of 17 cards still seemed like a deal to me back then, and card design already appears legendary when compared to the 1962 Topps design. People were going to put their kids through college hoarding these cards--or so they thought. George Brett, Pete Rose, Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, Phil Niekro, and these young guys named Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, and Mark McGwire. I still cherish this set to this day, with more than 20 complete sets, a few unopened wax boxes, and 1000's of extras. Since then, I've added to my collection the Traded set (x132), Glossy Send-in set (x60), Glossy All-Stars set (x22), Glossy Rookies set (x22) and the Wax Box Card set (x8). This set is a must-have for every baseball card collector as far as I'm concerned. What are your thoughts?

I hold this set in very high regard. Main reason is this is the first set where I really opened a lot of packs as a kid. My brother and I had some 83-86 topps as well in our collection so we must have opened earlier years but this is the first set where I have memories of opening them. We may have opened the equivalent of two wax boxes as kids although I don't think we ever completed a set back then. I can't remember exactly how many complete sets I have now. Maybe 5 as well as thousands of extras. An overall great product especially when considering the notable hall of famers and rookies in the group. When I think of an individual card from my youth it will always be 1989 Upper Deck #1. Sorry roundthediamond. But when I think of sets it is certainly this and the 1986 Topps release. Hard to believe it has been 30 years.

I hated these at first. I really like them now. And a TON of HOFers in there. Around here, it was all about Mattingly, Boggs, Gooden, Strawberry, Canseco, Eric Davis, and Bo Jackson. As the season progressed, names like McGwire and Dawson got bigger with those stats. Other big rookies were Will Clark, Bonds, Joyner, Larkin, Incaviglia, and Sierra. Surely there were more. And when I say Mattingly was a big deal, I mean you could get $1.25 for one easy!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Very nice set but overproduced...lotsa RCs and HOFers but little value. There are a few interesting ERR/VARs but there are some left out of our database. ex. the popular "errant black lines" on Bonds and Clemens". The 1987 set also has some neat subsets built in. like it ~BOB~

I had been collecting as a kid for 9 years when the '87 Topps cards came out . This set is definately one of my favorite '80's sets now and then . I remember seeing some previews of these cards in I think Baseball Cards magazine and reading that the Topps Rookie Cup was returning to the card fronts which I loved . I don't remember how many packs I opened back in 1987 but it was alot , I completed 2 sets that year with the help of a friend who was getting wax boxes from his grandmother what seemed to be weekly . I don't know how many sets I have built of these over the years but I probably won't stop building them any time soon . It is a great cheap set that I enjoy opening even now .

Wow, 30 years! It seems like yesterday. I really love the '87 set. I love the wood grain borders and the comic book font. There are so many favorite cards in this set that it would be hard to list them all, but two of my favorites are the Jose Canseco and the Bo Jackson. This is definitely a classic set!

First baseball set I ever tried building - back when I was around 13 or so (not that I'm much older now!). Always loved it and really enjoyed collecting it, and almost finished it too. Last I remember I was about 15-20 cards short. I've still got most of them. I like them today as autograph material, because they have the perfect texture for it. I think the wood-grain border is what stood out to me the most for them though. Absolutely loved it.

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

This was my 10th year of collecting, and would prove to be one of my biggest years. I bought these by the box toward the end of the season for about $8 per wax box at a local deli/convenience store (in southern NJ). I had tons. I hand collated at least 5 sets. A couple of them included the logo copyright variations. When I look at the 15-year span of 1978-1992 Topps sets, I think this one is the best design in my opinion. The only gripe I ever had was no positions on the front. Small gripe. Loved them then, still love them.

I had been collecting since 1982, but 1986 Topps was the first set that I bought enough of to complete a set. So when 1987 came out, it blew the boring (to me) 1986 set out of the water. Then 1988 came out and I wasn't impressed with that.
But what do I know.. I love 1982 Fleer.
