I can't think of a worse Topps design.

I don't mind the 90 topps although lots of folks don't like it...I did not like the start of the 'white' ere in 92 and 93...wish they would go back to old cardboard every couple of years or so

I imagine the change was part of their attempt to "class" it up to compete with Upper Deck.
The 1990 set kind of reminds me of the bright, flowered Hawaiian shirt in someone's closet that they wore once while on vacation and they look at it hanging there and have fond memories of that time, but they would never pull it out and wear it again in public and instead wonder what possessed them in the first place while they reach for the white, safe shirt.

I'd swear that everyone once in a while Topps let a color blind kid choose the design. The color schemes on these are just plain awful.

I think the only thing that saves this set from being their worst design ever is the no name on front (NNOF) Frank Thomas RC.
My vote goes to the 1987 design with the woodgrain borders. I even think theirs a blog floating around the interwebs based on burning all the cards that set he can get his hands on.

My vote for the worst set ever would be either the 1968 "burlap" set or the 2002 "pumpkin" colored set. (At least I think it was 2002 that was the pumpkin color.) I have wondered for years who designs the sets and then who actually selects and confirms the design. I have to believe there are more than one design submitted each year for selection. Some years you gotta wonder, if they chose that design, what ones could have been worse that they passed on.

For me it's a tie between the 1990, and 1986 topps designs.
The 1987 was my favorite. :D Probably because it was my first year collecting, but I really liked the wood grain design.
I've seen that blog about burning the 1987 topps, and personally I think it's a great idea, and I've even sent a few thousand of them to an early end myself. Maybe in a few dozen decades enough people will have thought that the late 80s and 90s cards were such wastes of money that they destroy enough to make a few of them worth something again.

I like the '87 also, it is kind of a throw back to the '62 set.

as someone mentioned earlier,, the frank thomas makes this set very interesting. and the low prices make me take chances on buying "1 more box" lol! But lets not forget the 454 jeff king! or the george bush cards as well.. then if you are an error/variation hunter like me, it is a treasure trove!! I have nothing but great love for this set. And 1 day i will hfinally complete my master set, which is looking to be around 3-5000 cards.. LMAO!! (ok.. maybe not that many (like the 90 donruss.. oh yes!! and think Red Star Benzinger.. we found that one a few months ago from an ebayer!), but there are LOTS!!) cheers!!
