I had no idea there was a variation. I just went through my complete puzzle and all 22 duplicate cards. Every single one of mine have decimals before the numbers. None of the other Donruss puzzle cards I have do though (Musial, Yaz, Carew, Spahn). I know each is from a different year, but was the Stargell the only one to have this variation?

No. I know the Yastrzemski and Carew puzzle pieces have the variation.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

It's either a Series One vs Series Two variation or a Factory Set vs packs variation. I only have a hand collated 1991 set and I just checked, and it has no puzzle in it! Ack! (I'll have to find my puzzles - I may have sent some out in packages.) My 1992 factory set has no puzzles in it at all, so I'm thinking it's going to be S1 vs S2. I'll have to see if I have any packs left. I hope not, I have enough of the singles floating around here!

Pretty sure it's series one vs two as well. I have a mostly unopened box of series one packs, and then a bunch of series two cards and only some series one. Almost all of my puzzle cards have no decimal, and just a few (probably the number of series one packs that I had opened) do. So, very likely:
Series 1: Decimal
Series 2: No Decimal

All my puzzles pretty much came my way thru a multi monster box buy. So I never checked series vs series vs factory sets. I do have all puzzles, . [decimal] and no decimal pieces. All years, all players.
If anybody needs sets, pieces etc, just pm me, I have plenty extras.

I can't believe a thread could go on so long over a decimal on a puzzle piece.
And for the one with the puzzle piece numbered 46, 47 and 49 hold on to it as you have a true VAR.

If some of you really dislike the Donruss puzzles, you're welcome to send them to me. I quite like them and I still have pieces listed in my want list to complete them all... :)
Most of the time, it seems easier to get puzzle pieces without the decimal, but Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Stargell, Rod Carew and Yogi Berra seem to be the opposite (easier to find with that decimal).

If my memory serves me, my box of Series 2 had all the decimal.
Just a hypothesis, can the decimal be a code for Donruss like the star on some U.S. dollar bill serial number? Something to mark it as a reprint or a revised version or which plant printed them?

Let me regroup here.
The decimal vs no decimal began to appear in 1990. Right?
They appear in Yaz, Stargell and Carew.
What year was Yogi? They have the variation as well?
Are there anymore puzzles that show this variation?
BTW: I have made very nice decoupaged framed puzzles for hanging in my card room with extra pieces.
Finally, I have plenty of extras throughout the years, propose a trade or PM me.
~Bob~
