I'll admit I didn't go thru the whole checklist but as a Dodger fan I was interested to see which Dodgers were included. Out of the 11 cards for Dodgers there were only 3 players who were not included in series 1 or 2. The rest are All Star/Home Run Derby type.
Those 3 players:
Cody Bellinger
Brett Eibner
Franklin Gutierrez
Obviously I'm not going to argue with one of the choices, but the other two had little to no impact on the team. Guys who actually had a solid impact for the team (ie Chris Taylor, Josh Fields, Brandon Morrow) seemed to just be glossed over. I'm not sure when the decisions on what players to include are made, but if there was enough time to include Bellinger (whose inclusion I'm obviously not debating), there should have been more than enough time to include a few other guys who had more of an impact (especially Taylor as he essentially became an everyday player in late April).
So that's basically the long winded way of saying my problem with what the update sets have become is essentially two fold:
1. I find the All Star/Home Run Derby cards to be unnecessary. I wouldn't mind it going back to a true "traded" set, roughly 100 cards in size, in the spirit that it was originally meant to be. But I realize this isn't as lucrative for Topps so it'll probably never happen.
2. There should be more effort put into identifying players that have actually had an impact and leave out the guys that played in 35 and 17 (mostly pinch hit) games in the early/mid season.
I used to consider the traded/update sets as part of the base sets but they have become less and less essential to me as time has gone on. I probably won't spend much money on this update set.

I just went and checked out my Tigers, and one of the "Updated Players" is Alex Avila, who was traded mid season to the White Sox. Isn't this the purpose of the Update Set?? Why add him to a team he was traded from and not his new team?? Many of the inserts for the Tigers are of Verlander, who now resides in Houston?? WTF?? (Funny note one of them is from an insert set Untouchables. Hope that isn't a set dedicated to players who are Untouchable in the trades!)

I haven't looked at the set, but I hope they at least avoid placing a banner that says "traded" and covers half the card.

This is what I would like to see: a checklist limited to a)rookies, b)players who changed teams, and c)players who didn't get a card in Series 1 or 2 but became unexpected contributors (such as Taylor, mentioned above). I could see a subset of All-Stars included, but the Home Run Derby cards should be an insert. In my mind, 300 cards is way too big for an update series. A lot of the fluff, like Derby or Rookie Debut or whatever other cards they have, could be eliminated or included as insert sets.

Maybe they think they won't sell cards without the big names like Trout and Harper, so they have to do things like All Star Game and HR Derby. Just do a one-per-pack insert of those guys and leave the base for the categories mentioned by TNT. I haven't checked the Cardinals yet. If De Jong isn't there, I may boycott.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Drew Smyly did not pitch a SINGLE inning this year for the Mariners. Yet he is included in the Update set.

This thread just adds to the continuation of why I stopped buying Topps MLB cards after they got the exclusive license. They just keep pumping out junk. They've forgotten who they are and what they used to mean to the hobby. They keep changing things gradually, but they are changing the wrong things. If they would stop putting out so many Prospect and Draft Pick cards in all their releases, Update could be filled with RC cards that people want and the Superstars wouldn't be necessary to sell the product. That's just MY personal opinion on Topps products for the past many years!

After my post, I viewed the checklist, and was pleased to see DeJong, Sierra, Brebbia, and Voit all got a card. All big contributors over the course of the season. Essentially, the Memphis Redbirds finished third place in the NL Central this year and only missed the playoffs by three games. An exaggeration, I know, but a lot of guys played in the majors this year that weren't expected to be in the majors this year, and did well.
i will buy enough of these cards to be sure I get those four. Not sure why Reyes got an ML Debut card when he debuted in 2016 and missed this entire season after Tommy John surgery. Didn't throw one regular season pitch.

I looked at the red sox and the devers rookie card isn't coming until 2018. I figured he played enough to get a rookie card.

I don't mind the All-Star cards, but the HR Derby cards can go. Even worse are the Rookie Debut cards. But hey, anything to have an excuse to make more Aaron Judge "rookie" cards, right?
