As one of the legends in hobby, the 1956 Topps set was significant for a number of reasons.
It was the largest baseball card set released since the 1952 Topps set, which in turn, was the largest set released since the 1909-1911 White Border (T-206) set.
This was Topps' first year as the sole major card producer after buying out Bowman at the start of the year.
This was also the last of five consecutive years between 1952-1956 that Topps cards were oversized (fitting 8-pocket pages) after modeling their initial 1951 set after the standard Bowman card size of the time (fitting 12-pocket pages).
The card fronts of the 1956 Topps set looked nearly identical to the previous year's set except for and added action scene in the background opposed to the solid colored background the of the 1955 set.
Wax packs of 1956 Topps cards could be found in either 1 cent or 5 cent versions--a tradition that continued since the introduction of their 5 cent packs in 1952 until the end of their 1 cent packs in 1966. The 1 cent packs contained 5 cards, while the 5 cent packs contained 6 cards.
