Hi, I'm a new member here, and while adding my collection I noticed that I have a number of cards that I could scan and add to the site. I have just been thwarted in that I have the hologram set of cards to complete the subset in this set, but my efforts at scanning return black images. I have been unsuccessful with finding any tips online. I'm using an older Epson scanner/printer with my pc and don't have an option for scanning holograms or any type of card that is 'special' in terms of manipulating light. Someone else scanned one of the images so I know it can be done somehow. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have 'old school' technology, just my scanner/printer on my pc, and maybe it isn't capable of doing this. But I would like to help the site with these uploads if someone knows the way to get these images properly seen by the scanner. Thanks for any help.

I have tried different spots on my scanner bed when I get a bad hologram scan and usually I will find a good location that scans well. Some holograms will just never scan well, ones that have a lot of background imagery or poorly designed will look bad no matter what you do.

Sometimes something as simple as turning the card on a bias will make a scan better. Many times that will hide a moire pattern that keeps coming up when scanning, perhaps it will help on a hologram. It's worth a try.

My Autograph Collection Website Emphasis is on the 1969 Cubs. This is still a work in progress as is my collection here at TCDB. Value what you collect, don't collect for value.

I am new here as well. I do not have a scanner and quite honestly have not used one in quite some time. Is there another way to scan cards into the database without using a scanner. Like maybe using a iphone and downloading the images onto the site.

Welcome both of you, you have found the best database site on the internet. First off I have never been able to make a hologram scan worth uploading, tried all my ideas with zero working. As for other types of images, sadly no the FAQ clearly states that scans are the only way to use images on this site. No phone scanning, no pictures. Only scans. Scanners can be had very cheap now a days and lots of goodwill stores, etc should have them too. I boughty a new one up here in Canada for under 100 bucks and it has all the bells and whistles.

craigrrules, the villagers will light their torches and grab their pitchforks if you upload images taken on a phone. If you don't have a scanner than you shouldn't upload images here.

Thanks for the update. I just read the rules as well, at least i tried to see what else I can do. I might have to go and buy myself a scanner now. By the way this site is the best database site on the internet.

Thanks for the welcome and replies everyone. I just had some success. I had the idea in my head but didn't think it would actually work. Like Billy said these are the green holograms that have the whole figure deep in 3D. I initially thought that lining up the card so that the scan goes top to bottom would apply the light the way the hologram 3D works, but that gave a black image. By turning the cards sideways, I was able to pull up the images. Somehow the light was able to illuminate the card detail with a side to side scan.
However, my scanner surface has streaks to it that seem to be showing in these scans, so until I get that cleaned up, I won't be uploading them yet. I think these are on the underside of the glass where the scanner passes, so I'm not sure about dismantling it. But, I'm one step closer.

You are 100% correct about the site - but I might be a little biased. :)
As far as contributing, there are several ways to contribute that don't include adding images. In the "Thins to do" sections, there are names that need to be validated (some added to the db, then the personal info for them, including birthdates), team validation (and adding them when missing), ensuring the notes and numbers are correct, and even helping review the images that others upload. All sorts of stuff can (and still needs to) be done on here that will help significantly.
Welcome aboard, find a comfy spot and make yourself at home. :)
