Were these team checklists a separate offering from Topps or are they a duplication of the set cards?

Separate offering - mail in - they are on a different card stock. Like all the other years that have them. :)
It's already in the Release Notes:

This came up in the 1977 Topps set a couple of months ago. "Paper stock, cut from a sheet," was in the Release Notes, now it states, "Printed on a thinner stock than the packed out cards, and only issued in full sheets (which were meant to be cut). The stock is also whiter than the normal cards."
I think we should do this for the 1978 set as it helps collectors figure out which version of the team checklist card they have.

I'm updating 1978's to be that, and I'll go through all the other ones as well and update them.

My bad. I checked the overview and forums but forgot to check the release notes.

No worries, this got many more fixed up (some had poor notes, some had no notes), so this helped. Thanks.

I ordered a set of these as a kid for the 1975 set. Stock was thinner and the backs were a lighter color paper.

I have a question related the the variation on the team cards. How much lighter is the team card set? Is it similar to the much lighter O-Pee-Chee cards, or is it just a subtle shade lighter?
