Diabetic Athletesby Billy Kingsley - 45 cards (Last updated on Feb 1, 2017) |
In 2013 I almost died from diabetes, which I did not know I had, when it turned into Ketoacidosis. Even today I have still not fully recovered from KTA and am told I probably never will.
11. 2015 Press Pass Cup Chase - Retail #51 Ryan Reed
Reed has the sponsorship backing of the Lilly Diabetes program. |
13. 1991-92 Racing Champions Exclusives #NNO NASCAR
No card known: Jamie Dick. He was diagnosed with Type 2 at the race track. He was not feeling well, and was sent to the Infield Care Center, the hospital set up at each race track, where he was diagnosed. They caught it just before it became Ketoacidosis. |
14. 1991 Collegiate Collection Legends of Indy #100 Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo / 1991 Winner Commemorative Offer
No card known: Charlie Kimball. Kimball has actually won in the Indy Car Series, winning at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2013. There are other athletes, in various sports, that do not have any known cards, including all from Australian Rules football, Cricket, and more, but I included the two auto racers because it's always been important to me. |

Cool list Billy. The only one I knew about was Adam Duvall. Some impressive athletes on this list. I'm especially surprised by the tennis players. Tennis is such a grueling sport that just requires so much energy. I would think that would be so difficult to manage being diabetic.

Ex-Oriole pitcher Jason Johnson has Type 1 diabetes. He wore his insulin pump on the back of his belt when he pitched to minimize the chances it would get hit by a ball. I'm pretty sure he had a card in one of the insert sets of 2016 Topps Update about guys playing through adversity.

Alongside these athletes who've overcome diabetes to participate in the sport they love stands you, Billy. Your love for the hobby and the exuberance with which you share that with others, me particularly, reflects your strong character. Keep taking it one day at a time. No one's promised tomorrow.

Thank you!

Are these cards on your Wantlist? Are you doing a binder or display of diabetic athletes? Here are some more that I didn't see on your list: Piggy Barnes | ||
I wasn't aware of them...they weren't on the Wikipedia list. I will work on getting them on the list when I get the chance. As of right now this list is my only collection, only a few actually appear in my physical collection. |
