Best Basketball Card Designs of All Time

2. 1997 SPx #SPX30 Stephon Marbury

This is my all time favorite. I can still remember pulling out my first SPx card from black wax, and how excited I was when I pulled out Phienix Suns # 7, Kevin Johnson. I was looking at it like it was made from gold still too young to understand monetary value. As a matter of fact it was from the gold subset. On my way home in the back of my parents car for the one and a half hour ride, I was turning the c ard in my hand to make the light bounce off just right, getting lost in the hologram. Reading every letter, number inspecting every curve and inch of deatail.

1. 2003-04 Fleer Avant #5 Kobe Bryant

As far as base card looks. Avannt takes the lead. The black matted paralell is just as attractive. It would have been nice to leave the bacground of the action shot, instead of textured and monochromatic, but it is still nice. Something completely different is going on on the backside of this card...

I appreciate your opinion from a designer's heart, but these, although attractive, miss the mark for two big reasons: 1) the concentration is on the graphics and not the player; and, 2) the sense of a trading card is lost. In my opinion, the Hakeem Olajuwon 1993-94 Stadium Club #89 embodies a perfect card because the focus is on the player which shows the intensity of competition and has just enough style to make it an attractive card, but not impede the spirit of the trading card.

Very good point. I did not know that opening a list is making it public and closing it is keeping in private, but this list is actually unfinished. I want to make it a top 10 and at the end I am sure you will find some sets to your liking. By the way, there is no mistake in you mentioning "intensity of competition", because the photo of Kobe on that Fleer Avant card was actually taken at an All-Star game after the whistle, so other than being aesthetic and nice to be featured on a card, it had really no point.
