Rejected! Players Who Refused to Sign an Autograph For Meby IfbBirdsCards - 7 cards (Last updated on Aug 18, 2018) |
1. 2013 Topps #119 Chris Davis
(Actually team set card, same design)
|
2. 2013 Topps #463 Jason Hammel
(Actually team set card, same design)

3. 2013 Topps #468 Anthony Gose
I actually recruited my dad to get this one signed at an Erie-Bowie game. There were some girls standing next to him. When he came out, the girls started asking him to sign. Gose snarled and asked “why would you want me to sign anything?” He warmed up for the game and snuck off the field, signing exactly 0 autographs. |
4. 1991 Topps #651 Alan Mills
Alan would sign any cards you wanted as the Bowie PC. However, after being promoted to the Orioles’ bullpen coach, he won’t sign any Yankees cards, only Orioles. |
5. 2013 Topps Update #US252 Preston Claiborne
Prior to a game against the Baysox, I asked him to sign. He said “not now, kid” and sat down and did nothing. 20 minutes later, I asked again and he replied again “not now, kid.” I asked again before the teams took the field and once again he said “not now, kid.” After this, I just canned the idea and went back to my seat. Oh, and he got lit up when he came in as a relief pitcher that night. Sweet revenge. |
6. 2016 Topps Heritage Minor League #26 Hunter Harvey
Only signs when he is forced to (i.e. FanFest.) Never signs, interacts, or even comes near fans before Baysox games. |
7. 2014 Topps #605 Tim Beckham
Not necessarily him not wanting to sign, but a complicated situation. He was on a rehab assignment in Bowie and he said he would sign after the game, gesturing behind the clubhouse. Prior to this season, you were allowed to hang out behind there and wait for players to get them to sign. I’ve done this before with Zach Britton. To get there, you have to exit the stadium. I joined up with a friend and started to walk back there. A “police officer” stopped us and said it was a restricted area. Apparently, some players said they were harassed for their autograph (probably Harvey) and fans were no longer allowed back there. No signs or anything. He actually told my friend this was the second time he saw him and next time, he would be arrested. While talking to him, we said we were leaving, but he continued to talk to us. He then said that we lied about leaving and told us “that’s another charge.” Yet this guy had no more authority than a security guard. So, Beckham didn’t directly turn me down, but the following was interesting to say the least. |

I actually love this list. The stories are great and I think it is hilarious that you remembered it enough to make it a list. I would say keep it coming, but I also don't want to hear you were being rejected, so I guess I'll say hopefully it doesn't grow. If you do come across someone who refuses though, I'll pay attention for the story!
Great stories, those are always the best....LOL. I once followed Kerry Wood from left field all the way to home plate trying to get him to sign a baseball. He signed a few quick autographs over the railing as he swiftly walked on by, but it wasn't my lucky day unfortunately. Nice list.
I also have a story about Ripken that I shared at the players depicted signing autos list.
My first attempt to ever get an autograph was rejected by Leon Durham. In fact, the only Cub signing that day was some rookie infielder called Sandberg. I wonder if he ever made it.
I don’t know, Switzr, I’ll have to look him up, haha.
This list is freakin' awesome!
Thanks! Not that awesome for me, haha, but true.
I don't get the Gose one. Isn't the whole point of learning baseball to impress girls so they ask for your autograph?
The game I tried to get his auto was right after the Tigers sent him from the big league team to AA, so he was probably more than a little irritated, but still, you’re going to disappoint some girls by not taking 30 seconds of your time to sign a few autographs because of your own issues. Plus, he should have been happy that someone even wanted his autograph in the first place.
All people including players have moody days. I think Gose is an example of this as he most likely did not think much of himself being sent down from the big league club. As for the Claiborne refusal, it is not surprising that he did not sign before the game. Many players unless assigned as the "designated signer" for the day won't sign before a game.
Usually, if a guy is the SP for that game, he will not sign. Club's policy. Also some players were prohibited by certain card companies they were under contract to from signing any cards other than those signed FOR the company. They may have signed a program, ball, but not a card.
SP’s almost never sign before a game. Only seen it happen once. I knew this and never ask. All the pitchers I mentioned were in the bullpen, except Hammel.
My son and I met Christian Walker at a Baysox game and he couldn't have been nicer.
ITs funny that the less know are the rudest im a chef in hawaii i got a ball signed this off spring by Areitta as a cubs fun this was HUGE i didnt even have to ask he brought it to dinner and gave it to me. |
