Way cool! It almost makes me want to collect them. Of all the failed card companies, I think Pro Set is the one that hurt the hobby most with it's loss. They actually "got it"m unlike so many others.
I miss Pro Set, other cards worth noting are that punters were people too according to Pro Set, they did coach cards, they did the various rookie cards for Jeff George in 1990 even teams he didn't get drafted by, also 801 card sets for football. I loved chasing the Super Bowl MVP inserts, I still remember ripping opening packs to finally get the Super Bowl II Bart Starr.
This list is awesome... Because I can tell you genuinely love collecting cards, and that's what it is all about.
Pro Set was awesome... Because every player is important to a team and deserves a card.
Pro Set is awesome as it is all I collect now, you would think having sets mass produced would be easy to find but some are just impossible, also they made sure the collector had everything for a set - large sets, binders and competitions
Just saw this, Chad, and it's a great perspective on a much maligned set. And coming from a Topps guy, too! Wow!
Cool list and write-up. I grew up on Pro Set, particularly their hockey sets (1990-91 and 1991-92). I love not only that they brought coach cards back to the hockey side of collecting, but they even threw in referee and linesman cards as well. Error cards didn't matter to a young collector, as I was happy with how colourful their first set was, and that the cards went deep into the roster to find players you couldn't find elsewhere. For example, with my Maple Leafs, you had cards of the likes of Gilles Thibaudeau, Brain Curran, and Doug Shedden, who I don't beleive had much product made while they were on the team. |
