1956-1957 Sioux City Soos
First Baseman

Played in 225 games in Sioux City at the tail end of his career. Over those two seasons he batted .316 in 829 at bats. His 28 home runs in 1956 led the team, and his slugging percentage led the team in both of his seasons with the club.

He's also credited with appearing once as a pitcher in 1957.

Served as the Soos manager in 1957 compiling a 71-82 record (fourth place finish). Story is that he broke his leg in the final month of the season and relinquished his managing duties to Ted Shandor. He moved on to the Cleveland Indians farm system in 1958.

Appeared in 2 games for the 1952 Chicago White Sox.

Split season between Sioux City, class A Jacksonville Tars (South Atlantic League), and class AAA Jersey City Giants (International League). In 12 games with the Soos, sported a 5-3 record and a 4.08 ERA. Allowed only 2 home runs in his 64.0 innings pitched.

Recorded a lone single in his 22 at bats (.045 batting average).

MLB Career: Appeared in 41 games between 1952-1955 with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. Lifetime 6-9 record with 4.24 ERA and 1 save.

Played in 68 games over two seasons where he batted .340 with 9 home runs. Slugged an impressive .646 over 82 at bats in 1952 season (.378 batting average).

In 1952, managed team to 83-71 record which was good for fourth place. They lost to league champions, the Denver Bears, in the first round of the playoffs.

In 1953, team was 70-84 and finished seventh.

MLB career: .252 batter (2911 at bats) in 985 games over 14 seasons (1935-1940, 1943-1944, 1946-1951) with Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Giants. Hit 56 career major league home runs. Was an All-Star 1944.

A local knuckle-baller hero (Remsen, Iowa) who came home in the final year of his baseball career, went 12-8 with a 3.41 ERA in 161.0 innings pitched (20 games).

MLB career: 9 year MLB career (1938-1946) with Boston Bees, Cincinnati Reds, Saint Louis Browns, Washington Senators, then back to Boston Braves. Career 64-69 record in 184 games (161 starts). 3.22 ERA in 1250.2 innings pitched. 620 career strikeouts. Led league in hit batsmen (11) in 1942. Traded by Browns to Senators in 1943 where he had an impressive 0.88 ERA in 6 starts (4-2 record) over 51.0 innings pitched. Finished in the top 10 in league ERA in 1942, 1943, and 1944. Finished 5th in league strikeouts in both 1942 and 1944. Was oldest player playing in the league in 1946.

Split time during season with class A Jacksonville Tars (South Atlantic League), class B Vicksburg Hill Billies (Southeastern League) and Sioux City. In 33 games with the Soos, batted .271 in 107 at bats.

MLB Career: Played 48 games for the 1956 Kansas City Athletics where be batted .271 in 85 at bats.
