The Dunk: Most Recycled Photo Ever?

by bevans - 21 cards (Last updated on Feb 8, 2020)

1. 1983-84 Star #115 Larry Nance

The tiny Star Company couldn't have selected a better photo for Nance's first card.

2. 1986-87 Fleer #78 Larry Nance

Two years later Fleer would bring the same photo to a wider audience.

3. 1991-92 Hoops - Slam Dunk #I Larry Nance

Hoops got in on the action with this 1991-92 insert featuring the first six Slam Dunk Contest winners.

4. 1992-93 Fleer #276 Larry Nance

Fleer snuck the image onto the back of this "Slam Dunk" subset card a year later.

5. 2003-04 Upper Deck Finite #149 Larry Nance

Ten years after he retired and twenty years after the photo was taken, Upper Deck illustrates a common problem with modern cards by cropping out the background. This one is also available in a "gold" parallel.

6. 2005-06 Topps 1952 Style - All-Time Fan Favorites Autographs #FFA-LNA Larry Nance

Topps finally gets in on the action with this autographed insert in 2005-06. There will be many more autographed versions to come.

7. 2009-10 Upper Deck #286 Larry Nance

Nance was one of 55 sepia-toned "Immortals" featured in Upper Deck's final NBA set.

8. 2011-12 Hoops - Slam Dunk Champion #1 Larry Nance

The first Panini card in the list. Ironic that it features two different images on the front since Panini is infamous for duplicating the same photo on front and back.

9. 2012-13 Panini Crusade - Crusade Blue #106 Larry Nance

For the serious completist, this one is also available in black, gold, green, purple, and red parallels.

10. 2012-13 Panini Intrigue - Dunk Company Autographs #17 Larry Nance

Another autographed card. But this one is horizontal so that makes it totally different!

And who used it first? Thank you very much.

Wow. Never realized how many cards it appeared on! Would be cool if they did a card with Larry Jr and his recreation of it at this year's slam dunk competition.

I have none of these cards, so I was completely unaware it was on so many of them.  The thing is, Nance was a very solid player for a very long time, and these cards give the impression he was a one-hit wonder.

The crazy thing is that I have 5 of them and never realized it appeared so often! (I have the first 4 and the Past & Present card)

Fantastic photograph by Andrew D. Bernstein. He makes NBA action look better than it actually is. The Star Co. card is my favorite. Unfortunately the photo had to be cropped to fit on a card. The actual photograph is stunning. You can see much more of the crowd. All eyes are riveted on Nance and there's not one cell phone is sight.
