1. 1955 Topps All-American #78 Jay Berwanger


First winner of the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy in 1935. Failed to sign with an NFL team. Never played professional football.


2. 1955 Topps All-American #26 Larry Kelley


Second winner, first of the renamed Heisman Trophy in 1936. Drafted 87th overall by the Detroit Lions. Signed by the Boston Shamrocks but reneged on his contract and never played.


3. 1992 Heisman Collection II #3 Clint Frank


1937 Winner

Never played in the NFL.


4. 1955 Topps All-American #34 Davey O'Brien


1938 Winner

The award for the best quarterback in college football is named for him.

Two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though he had led NFL in various passing categories, he won only one game each season.


5. 1955 Topps All-American #35 Tom Harmon


1940 Winner

No success with NY Americans in 1941. Saw service in WWII. Two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams were ineffective due to wartime injuries to his leg.


6. 1948 Bowman #104 Bruce Smith


1941 Winner

877 total yards in four seasons.


7. 1955 Topps All-American #76 Angelo Bertelli


1943 Winner

Three unimpressive seasons, retired after numerous knee surgeries.


8. 1948 Bowman #71 Leslie Horvath


1944 Winner

Played poorly for two seasons. Didn't play his third season. Then retired.


9. 1950 Bowman #16 Glenn Davis


1946 Winner

Selected to Pro Bowl his first season. A reinjured knee in his second season ended his career.


10. 1951 Topps Magic #10 Vic Janowicz


1950 Winner

One full season with the Washington Redskins.

Manziel has talent, but he needs to more logical in his decisions outside of football to truly get a chance to even display his true ability.

In Bellino's defense, you should note that after graduating from the Naval Academy, he had to serve 5 years in the Navy before going into the pros.

Would Herschel Walker count for this list? While I thought he was okay, I think he never lived up to his full potential.

Really cool list. The only disagreement I have is Vinny Testaverde. Sure he wasn't an elite talent but he was a very solid QB for 21 seasons and that is why he stuck around so long. If a team needed a veteran backup or a starter who could hold his own while they prep a young QB, Vinny was their man.
