People I've Met

by rmpaq5 - 20 cards (Last updated on Apr 4, 2024)

11. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #254 Rick Kehoe

Rick Kehoe was good friends with a friend of my father. Met him many times when I was very young.

12. 2011 Topps Heritage #416 Jim Leyland

The school I teach at used to participate in a program where some of the kids got to go out on to the field during the 7th inning stretch at Rogers Centre and perform with the Blue Jays cheerleaders during the "Lets Go! Blue Jays!" song. Being in charge of the trip, and seeing that the Tigers were playing the Jays near the end of school, I applied for a game between the two. The kids are brought down behind the dugouts an inning early where they emerge from, and I of course pick the Tigers dugout to accompany half the kids. Waiting there after the bottom of the 6th Leyland walks out of the dugout back toward the clubhouse entrance and sees us all standing there. He waved to the kids and I introduced him to the students and explained to them who he was. He talked to the kids for the entire commercial break period asking them questions about school and then asked me about teaching. Very cool. Of course he did this while sucking back a smoke.

13. 1981 O-Pee-Chee #52 Lloyd Moseby

Like George Bell, met him at the hotel we stayed at in 2019 for the youngest's first experience at Blue Jays Camp. This man is fantastic with the kids, always upbeat, positive, and a huge smile on his face.

14. 1990 Pro Set PGA Tour #80 Arnold Palmer

I can't believe I forgot this one when I originally made this list, and a few more pro golfers will be added soon, but as I found out making the Michael Bradley post few golf cards exist from the era I worked at Essex Golf and Country Club. As mentioned I worked as a Caddy, and then subsequently in the pro shop/bag drop area later. I met Mr. Palmer when he played at the club prior to a tournament that was there. I cannot remember the tour that stopped there, it wasn't the full PGA but a smaller pro tour, but he played a round at the start of the tournament as a promotion.

15. 1991-92 7th Inning Sketch OHL #234 Rod Pasma

I work with his wife! I knew he was an NHL executive, but it never occurred to me to search for cards he may have until I stumbled upon him in the database.

16. 2014-15 Upper Deck #499 Kerby Rychel

Before I moved to Georgetown from the Windsor area I taught one year before moving for a permanent position. I taught Kerby for half a year when he was in Grade One as a Long Term Occasional Teacher when his regular teacher was on sick leave.

17. 1993-94 Donruss #156 Warren Rychel

From Parent Teacher Conferences with Kerby.

18. 1995-96 Marquette Golden Eagles CPI #NNO Richard Shaw

Went to the same high school and played together on the same high school basketball team. He played alot, myself very little. I have already tagged this card as "scan needs replacing" but it is the only card of his 3 that has an image so don't delete LOL!

19. 1997-98 Donruss Canadian Ice #142 D.J. Smith

See the Andy Delmore entry!

20. 1991 Classic WWF Superstars #58 Virgil

Virgil was a signer at the Toronto Sport Expo a few years ago. Moving from table to table looking at cards and being disappointed as usual that most tables had only hockey cards, I spotted him working behind a random table. I recognized him right away, to which he put his fingers to his lips and said,"Shhh I'm in disguise." Guess he was bored and decided to have some fun.

Fun list!  I'll probably make one of my own now that you've given me the idea!
