UNR / Reno area players

1. 2005 Donruss Leather & Lumber - Leather Cuts #LC-39 Lyle Overbay

Played at UNR from 1996-99. The best baseball player to come out of Nevada in my opinion. He played for several teams over his MLB (2001-2014) career and was part of the 2001 World Series Champions while playing his rookie year with the Diamondbacks.

1990 Leaf #519 Shawn Boskie Front

2. 1990 Leaf #519 Shawn Boskie

Although Shawn did not go to UNR he went to Reno High School, where my mom went. He had a good career in the majors with his 8 total seasons. Started his rookie year for the Cubs and played with 6 teams by the end.

2008 Upper Deck First Edition #13 Chad Qualls Front

5. 2008 Upper Deck First Edition #13 Chad Qualls

Only played 2 years at UNR (1999-2000) with 79 wins and 7 complete games. Made Nevada HOF in 2018. Had a decent career in the majors.

2010 Topps Update #US-112 Chad Qualls Front

6. 2010 Topps Update #US-112 Chad Qualls

He played from 2004-2017 in majors.

2010 Upper Deck #49 Chad Qualls Front

7. 2010 Upper Deck #49 Chad Qualls

Played for 9 different teams over his career.

1990 Topps #146 Rob Richie Front

8. 1990 Topps #146 Rob Richie

Rob is the only baseball player I have to have been born and raised in Reno and played for UNR. His only MLB experience was in 1989 and batted .265 with 55 at bats.

10. 1996 Fleer Update - Tiffany #U209 Chris Singleton

Chris played football and baseball at UNR (1992-93). He was drafted by the Giants but didn't make his debut until 1999 with the Whitesox. He finished 6th in the AL Rookie of the Year ballot and ended up playing 6 seasons in the majors. He is now a baseball broadcaster.

Unfortunately, the *-reference.com doesn't cover CFL guys, but there are cards available of guys like Lucuis Floyd, Shar Pourdanesh and Chris Vargas available. And Fajardo is having a great season with the Riders, having become the starter after an injury and has lead them to the Western Division lead. Still no CFL cards for him, though.

I like that Babbitt and Johnson went on to play together professionally. I'm not really familiar with them, but it's a cool story and experience for them.

Bob Hamm, #90 Houston Oilers, 1983-1984, never received his own NFL card.  But he made a cameo appearance on Eric Dickerson's 1985 Topps Record Breaker card.

Good find C2Cigars! I never would have found that! I wonder how many players who don't have cards are lost in the background.
