The "Top of Topps Football" Wall of Fameby cnangle - 59 cards (Last updated on Mar 11, 2019) |
On display is a card from my collection that I think best represents the set. For most years, that's the key rookie card. For the years I don't have the key rookie, it's probably a HOF Vikings player. However, there are a couple years where a card has some special interest to me, '77 Walter Payton for instance.
I'm sure I will end up changing some of these out as I continue to complete sets, at least I hope so.
11. 1967 Topps #12 Art Graham
AFL only again. I want the Wahoo McDaniel on display. He would end up as a wrestler and will have a little rivalry with Ernie Ladd.

12. 1968 Topps #196 Bob Griese
This is the most significant card in this set. I have a pretty good example of this card. Mine is well centered with fairly solid corners. That's pretty good for this low quality set. I think Topps missed the target with the '68 set. I love the design, I love the team logos, and this is the last time we see team logos on helmets for many years to come. Unfortunately the production quality of this set is terrible. It's so bad it ruins what would otherwise be my favorite set. |
13. 1969 Topps #120 Larry Csonka
Another low budget set by Topps. The design is kind of a throw-back to the '56 set and like that earlier set, this one leaves me wanting more.
|
14. 1970 Topps #59 Alan Page
To me, this set begins what I call the pre-modern football sets. This is the first year that Topps used a "waving pennant" design element. This will be repeated in the '75, '77, '81 (kind of), and '82 sets. If you use your imagination you can see it again in the '98 set.

15. 1971 Topps #156 Terry Bradshaw
This is my earliest completed set. The Bradshaw rookie is awesome and I'm glad to own an EX example of the card. |
16. 1972 Topps #104 Ron Yary
Of course I want the Staubach RC. But an RC of Viking's HOF'er Ron Yary is pretty awesome too. SKOL! |
17. 1973 Topps #89 Franco Harris
This is the card to have. I've held this set in low regard for many years but it's starting to grow on me.

18. 1974 Topps #5 Carl Eller
This set is the first set that I remember opening packs of. It does not not have a very strong rookie class though. Not to worry, this is a great opportunity to display another Viking HOFer that wouldn't otherwise get a spot. A part of the Minnesota Gophers National Champion team and a member of the Puple People Eaters. SKOL! |
19. 1975 Topps #84 Mick Tingelhoff
This spot should go to Dan Fouts, but I don't have one. Mick is a good stand in though. A HOFer who played with the Vikings from '62 to '78, starting every game including an NFL Championship and four Super Bowls. SKOL! |
20. 1976 Topps #148 Walter Payton
Another selection that requires very little thought. This is probably the most significant Topps football card since Namath's '65 rookie. |
