Smeltzer made his Major League debut last month. His inclusion on the MLB Debuts list on this site inspired me to see who else shares my last name. Smeltzer was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of 9, which was declared in full remission in 2012.

My great grandfather's surname was Schmeltzer, and when my grandfather was born as the first of 9 children in 1919, great grandpa John dropped the CH from the name to make it a bit more American, since Germany was considered fairly evil at the time.

Schmelzer was born in Germany, and has played in his home country his entire professional career. The addition or subtraction of the T in the surname can still be related to my family, and is sometimes attributed to misspellings of immigrants or in at least one case, a falling out among family members that wanted to separate themselves by changing their name without completely losing their name.
