Why Did I Collect This?

by captkirk42 - 8 cards (Last updated on Jan 30, 2024)

1. 1981 Fleer Here's Bo! #22 So this is the new crew John hired?

OK why is this set on here? The set features Sexy Bo Derek and behind the scenes photos from the Tarzan movie she was in. OK so sexy woman and Non-Sport movie set doesn't necessarily gets a set on this list. Then Why? I've only seen "Tarzan" once and that was a few years before I actually got this set. I broke down and got this set from Ebay for cheap plus the set I got included the all the back variations. I don't normally like multi-variation sets but I decided to go for this one. I eventually got the 12 mini-poster set that was an insert to this set to satisfy the completest collector in me. [Edited 30 Jan 2024]

2. 1991 Topps Beverly Hills 90210 #88 Staying on Top

OK this is a guilty pleasure set. I watched the first and maybe the 2nd season of this show, sort of stopped watching it for a while after Shannen Doherty left the show. 90210 was a show that was aimed at tween girls, which is why it is "guilty pleasure" show they had the beautiful girls for us guys who got suckered into watching the show. I'm sure there were a lot of teenage boys and twentysomething guys who got roped into watching the show by their girlfriends. One of the things that turned me away from the show (besides the fluffy tween girl target audience theme) was originaly the characters were in different classes a couple of seniors most of the others juniors and a couple of freshmen/sophomores. Then for season 2 on they made all of them seniors even the freshman character (David) and for the special graduation episode all of them graduated at the same time.

3. 1979 Topps NASL #26 Washington Diplomats Logo

I got this full set of Soccer stickers. Originally I was just going to get the Washington Diplomats (My Homie Team from the NASL). I saw them play a game once at RFK their home stadium they shared with the Redskins. I forget if they won or who they played. I decided what the heck it was not only a card/sticker of a defunct team I had enjoyed but also an entire league.

I'm not normally one who goes for Soccer except sometimes during the Olympics and World Cup.

4. 1991 Topps American Gladiators #34 Ice Lands a Blow

I put this set on this list because it was a "reality" sports competition show. I normally don't like competition shows, but American Gladiators (based on one of the European Gladiator shows) started in 1990 or so around the time Rock & Rollergames aired on TV. I fell for both shows, so when these cards came out I bought and bought packs and a full box or two to complete the set. Yeah that was before the internet so I do have many dupes around somewhere. Basic premiss of the show was each "episode" 2 men and 2 women would compete in athletic games/races against each other directly and sometimes against a "Gladiator" (a professional athlete and main member of the show's "team") sometimes against both. There were about a dozen different events but only about 6 were shown per episode. The events were rotated so the audience would see the different ones, but not all the contestants would be shown in all events. Each event would score the contestant points, but basically the final event "The Eliminator" an obsticle course would decide the winner. The points a contestant had would determine who would have the advantage the contestant with more points would get so many seconds headstart per point. So winning more events and getting big points would give a huge advantage. Most of the time the headstart wasn't really too much of an advantage but often helped.

5. 1989-90 ProCards CBA #180 Bullet Bear

This is a minor league Basketball team set the Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets. As people familiar with my collecting habits maybe aware at one time I was not into Basketball at all and my only PC team are the Wizards (were Bullets). This team has nothing to do with the Washington Bullets that became the Wizards that I collect, they weren't even their farm team. They were sponsored by the Miller Brewing Company for the "Silver Bullet" brand. There was also a woman's softball team called the "Silver Bullets" (they have 3 years of card sets)

6. 2014-15 Hoops #295 Nick Johnson

OK I'm not a huge fan of Basketball (but am getting there) and my only team I PC is Bullets/Wizards. So why this card? Why this guy? Well it is Baseball related. You see when the Expos became the Nationals there was this first baseman named Nick Johnson who quickly became one of my fave players, although he was injury prone throughout his career. Well then a few years ago along comes a Hockey Player with the name Nick Johnson. I decided to try to PC him as well. Now there is this Hoops Player named Nick Johnson so why not?

7. 1991 Pro Set NHRA #126 Dan Pastorini

This card is on this list because Dan Pastorini was in the NFL before getting into racing. He was on the Oiilers, Raiders, RAMS, and Eagles. I'm keeping the card in my PC because of his time on the Rams in 1981. I first got this card, along with others from the same set from my brother who is a big racing fan. He gave me his dupes from the set. I had this card up on Ecrater along with the other cards from the set since I don't collect racing cards. A few years back when I recalled that Dan had been an NFL player and specifically on the Rams I decided to keep this card.

8. 2014 SP Game Used - Retro Rookies #R59 Michelle Wie

First and probably only reason this card is on this list is I am not a Golf fan. I don't watch golf (too boring) I don't follow it and I really don't care that much about it. Sure I like mini golf but it has been years a decade at least maybe two since I last attempted to play mini golf. A big reason I got this card is Michelle Wie is a babe. I don't recall which Online site I got this card from or how much I actually paid for it. I know it would not be more than $10.

I had no idea the American Gladiators got cards until I saw them on the Database. I loved that show/competition when it was new, and when it was on ESPN Classic recently...I still do. I have not been able to hunt down any of the cards yet though.

Billy, Yep I watched it religiously that first year (along with Rollergames, they had a Nintendo game for that I had when I had a NES system but I don't think rollergames had any cards). I forget which card it was that stumped me to complete my set. I think it was one of the Ice cards, or her sticker.

Let me get this straight...the Bo Derek set isn't actually a "Tarzan, The Ape Man" set, but a set showing pictures of her on the set of Tarzan? A behind the scenes set? That's kind of weird, but I suppose it sold better with the name Bo in it, than it would have with the name Tarzan. Still weird though. Her husband really did try to milk her good looks for every penny they were worth!

I come across cards in my Misc boxes and scratch my head, "Where the heck did these come from? And why do I have them?"

Nothing wrong with Bo Derek.
