Probably the ugliest looking set ever made ...EVER! I mean whoever came up with the 3 panel card should have been fired on the spot. Sad thing is, Magic and Bird's rookie cards are considered to come from this set.

Very first pack of cards I ever opened... to this day I cant remember who was in it, but remember separating them all... stupid, stupid 9 year old!!! don't know what ever became of them, guessing chucked by Mom at some point..

wasnt til a couple years later that I started actually collecting.. sadly the resources we have now werent available then. card shops were stil few and far between. packs picked up wherever I could find them. Remember in 83 seeing a buddy of mine with his cards in an album.. I thought "Great Idea!!!" so punched holes in my complete 83 donruss set to put into an album.. wasnt til a couple years on that I realized what the problem with that was... OOPS

I have the Bird, Magic rookie card. I collected 1 or 2 packs when I was a kid and got lucky. Found it in a shoe box years later.

The 1980-81 Topps basketball card set contains 264 different individual players (1 1/6" by 2 1/2") on 176 different panels of three (2 1/2" by 3 1/2").

This set was issued in packs of eight cards costing 25 cents per pack which came 36 packs per box. The cards come with three individual players per standard card. A perforation line segments each card into three players. In all, there are 176 different complete cards, however, the same player will be on more than one card. The variations stem from the fact that the cards in this set were printed on two separate sheets.

The first 88 cards comprise a complete set of all 264 players. The second 88 cards (89-176) provide a slight rearrangement of players within the card, but still contain the same 264 players. The cards are numbered within each series of 88 by any ordering of the left-hand player's number when the card is viewed from the back.

SD refers to a "Slam Dunk" star card. The letters AS refer to an All-Star selection pictured on the front of the checklist card. There are a number of Team Leader (TL) cards which depict the team's leader in assists, scoring or rebounds. Prices given are for complete panels, as that is the typical way these cards are collected. Cards which have been separated into the three parts are relatively valueless.

The key card in this set features Larry Bird, Julius Erving and Magic Johnson. It is the Rookie Card for Bird and Magic.

Topps decided to add a new wrinkle to this set-- by making three mini cards instead of one card which were perforated --and hasn't ever been done since, the script used for the team's name was similar to that of the 78 baseball set with the cursive letters. Of course these cards are only truly valuable today if you have a card which is still together instead of torn up. I bought these cards as a kid but unfortunately wasn't bright enough to keep a card together and instead cut them up, like I think most kids did. the most valuable card from this set being the Larry Bird/Julius Erving/ Magic Johnson card.
