I gave this set 7.5. It’s a classic like many members have mentioned already. The design was fresh and unique to any cards of its time with the exception of say Score. Advanced stats and great player bio are also a nice addition to the card back. Over produced but not under appreciated.

This was the first pack of cards I ever opened. I got my first raider card. Howie Long. After that I couldn't stop for about a year straight. Within 12 month I had over 2000 raider cards. That's how it started

thanks to Shane (ebay seller talyho-enterprise) for letting me post a picture of the 1989 Pro Set Error and Variations Set and the 1990 Pro Set Owners Edition Series 1 and 2 in the packaging section, both sets are extremely rare and are very high on my wish list, unfortunately their cost is also very high which cancels out any hope of getting them soon.

Edit: finally picked up the Owners Edition December 2023 of Jim Bailey, picked up the Errors and Variations set in 2022

I have added a picture of the Series 1 Owners Edition which are quite rare, in fact other than hearing about these this is the first picture I have ever seen, speaking with the seller he says all the cards are the same as the regular released ones with only the binder being different.

I've been collecting cards for a long time and I have the 1989 pro set plus some errors and the "William Perry" sp card I also have a James Loton card (#463) and A Blair Bush card (#455) which I acquired years later. I was wandering if anyone out there knows anyting about these cards and if anymore exist

My favorite NFL set! Pro Set brought both color and much more complete stats to the NFL card scene. Also of interest were the inclusion of actual draft pick cards rather than the typical Topps rookie cards simply showing the player's first year in the league. With the large set (in two series) and the Final Update release, there were plenty of players for even the then-mediocre teams. My first exposure to the set was a Dan Marino card obtained at a card show at the Pro Bowl. Years later, I managed to track down the entire set, including all of the extras, for about ten bucks. Pro Set really did a nice job, and the card designs stand up well when compared with others of the current era.

Even though this set was overproduced as the company was new and adjusting to the hobby, I think it is a great set. I love opening packs of these cards and seeing the photography.

1989 was such a great year because there were more than just Topps football cards to collect. Pro Set and Score added variety to a market that consisted of pretty much just one company for years. I remember buying packs of these cards like mad, which was easy because they were so affordable back in the day. i just recently dug all my old cards out of my basement and am sorting through them all and will also start scanning them to add to the collections on this site. I'm glad to have found it.

This was one of the first "new" sets to use color on both sides of the card. While it contained some errors throughout, it was a very nice set and was very plentiful. It also contained cards that Topps did not print such as announcers, coaches, Super Bowl logo art cards and even a Santa Claus card. Pro Set maintained it was a "living" card set, meaning that as the errors and variations were found, the presses were stopped and updated cards were printed. The set consisted of Series 1 cards 1 through 440, Super Bowl logos I through XXIII, and a commemorative card of Commissioner Pete Rozelle. Series 2 consisted of 100 cards numbered 441 through 540, announcers 1 through 30, an updated card for Raider's safety Stacey Toran, and finally a 'final update' of cards 541 through 561. Card 47, Bears' defensive tackle William Perry, was withdrawn early since he did not belong in the NFL Player's Association and was off-limits. The cards were only issued in packs as no complete factory set was issued by the company. The Santa card was printed and made available initially to hobby dealers and distributors in December 1989.
