1994 found Press Pass still trying to establish themselves in the hobby.The 93 Preview set was quite small, only 35 cards with the Gordon redemption included. In 1994 Press Pass swung the other way, producing a 150 card set..But bigger does not necessarily translate to better.It almost seemed that if anyone got near a stock car they got their picture included in the set.At least 30 of the cards feature drivers/crew chiefs/owners/hangers on that might have qualified for 1 race in 94 finishing in the top 42. And did we really need a card of Speed Racer. Heck, the cartoon was not even that good.
There are some redeeming features to the set. Dale Sr. was included for the first time. Also this was the first showing of the immensely popular Cup Chase Cards. And I will give a shout out to the Authentics. They were a 8x10 mail order item that came either plain or autographed. 2500 of each of the 5 drivers were produced and have increased in value much more then the other cards. When they are offered for sale they usually will get overbook realized in pricing.
1994 was another year of learning the ropes for Press Pass.They were still trying new concepts, some like the Cup Quest working very well, others not so well.It would take them another year or 2 to produce a really good set, but they were on their way.
