I got a pack at a birthday party as a "grab bag" gift, with some candy. The first card I saw was Rico Carty. The second card I saw was Rickey Henderson. Still have them.

1980 Topps is the first pack I opened that I bought with my own money. mowed a lawn and knew that was the first thing I was going to do with my money.

These are the first cards I ever bought; 4 packs for a dollar at the 7-Eleven. Kept them bundled together in rubber bands. I always liked cards with the players' autographs on the front.

First pack of cards I bought was from our local grocery store in Kansas. If I found a quarter and a penny I was heading down there to buy another pack, sometimes making multiple trips each day. I remember picking up my first rack pack at the souvenir stand at the Wichita Aeros (Cubs AAA affiliate) games.

I know that my parents picked up some '77, '78 & '79 Topps for me (I was born in '73) but THIS was my first set. Rack pack after rack pack, going to the grocery store with my Dad. One of these days I'll complete that set (which is certainly not in mint condition).

My parents and I were staying the night in Gaylord Michigan and my Mom bought me a few packs of 1980 Topps. I got a Lou Whitaker and a Gaylord Perry among them... Had them all sorted and was astonished when Mom wouldn't take me back to that store to get more. Haha. Well it was likely 10 or 11 at night by then...

These are the first packs I remember asking my parents to buy for me. They came in packs that had three bundles of cards. 1980 would be the year that started it for me!! I'm 49 and still collecting with the same excitement I had when I started!! I just discovered this site and it still seems to good to be true!! WOW!!!

This is the year that started it all. Year number one of the numerous hours and exorbitance of money spent. Ahhhh….but I love it!

Topps was known for a "colorful" looking front and 1980 did not disappoint. What a fun set to put together, loaded with HOFers, and the Ricky rookie card. Triple digits in the early 1990's, now an affordable RC. The backs were loaded and I loved the ribbons. Next to the 1981 Topps set, this was my favorite set I put together.

One of the more plain designs by Topps, but the back notes and hi-lights made this set worth collecting.

This is this first year I really began getting into cards. In the late 70s I guess I had a few but in 1980, I got my first paper route at 11 yrs old and starting spending my money on cards. This continued through the mid-1980s. My buddy and I voraciously bought cards from the local convenience store owner. We bought all sports all year round. I still have the sets I built in the early 1980s and look through them every once in a while. While I started with baseball, all of my attention is now on HOF football collection. Thank you to Jim Rice, Carl Yaz, Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans - the best cards from the 1980 Topps set (in my humble Boston opinion) for getting me hooked on collecting.

I remember my grandmother buying a brown paper bag full of baseball cards for me at a garage sale in 1986. That bag was loaded with 1980 Topps. Henderson was in there with just about every other all-star at the time. Schmidt, Brett, Ozzie, Rose, Winfield, Murray, Murphy, Ryan, Hernandez, and so on. The Gary Carter card is always the card that first comes to mind when I think of 1980 Topps since it was featured in Beckett, seemingly, for years at the top of the 80 Topps column. Great set.

One of my two favorite card sets in terms of childhood memories and sentimentality as this was the first set of cards I ever started to buy (I was seven years old at the time) and remember going to the local drug store to buy a pack for 25 cents. This was also the card set that also helped me fall in love with baseball as a seven year old. I remember looking at the players pictures on the front of the card and being mesmerized by those images. The design although simple, with two folding banners-giving the players position on the left hand corner and the team's name in the right hand corner-with the team's color scheme-was effective and one that I really enjoyed. The most valuable card from this set is the Ricky Henderson rookie.
