Non-Sport Sets That Never Were: The Wes Anderson Cinematic Universe by BucCollector
Last updated on Sep 6, 2023

From the beginning of his career, casting has been Wes Anderson’s greatest strength. He’s had an incredible trajectory, graduating from his roots of simply using the performers available to him within a three block radius of the flop house on Throckmorton Street in Dallas he was sharing with similarly broke friends (including Owen Wilson, and occasionally his little brother Luke) when he made a short film about two Texas s***heels suffering from terminal ennui who half-heartedly take up a life of crime.

Anderson is a filmmaker who historically seems most comfortable around familiar faces, returning to the same actors over and over again, occasionally indoctrinating new faces into the fold and making them a part of the team. For the criticisms he’s faced as an icy and impersonal writer, he clearly has forged loyalty and enduring love among a community of actors.

The most notable omission from this set, of course, is Jason Schwartzman, who has a long list of film and television credits (including eight Anderson films) but somehow has never appeared on a trading card.

(The first two paragraphs above, and most of the notes are from the August 2023 GQ article The Definitive Ranking of Wes Anderson’s Players at https://www.gq.com/story/wes-anderson-movies-actors-ranked-asteroid-city.)

Non-Sport Sets That Never Were: A League of Their Own by BucCollector

A League of Their Own featured a fantastic cast, including many Hollywood veterans, bit players, and some former AAGPBL players in cameo roles. Here's the unofficial set, checklisted in the order in which the actors were credited (per IMDB).

Debut cards for all 2014 first-time major leaguers by Mungo Hungo
Last updated on Sep 2, 2023

Each player's card is from 2014 or the next possible year, except that multi-player cards, game cards and a few other types are skipped over and used only absent other options. Minor league cards are used as a last resort. I own each card pictured. The highly uninteresting rules are in my profile page, linked above.

See any mistakes, such as the card picturing the wrong player or misspelling a name? Or maybe a higher priority card exists but isn't yet listed in TCDB? Please let me know.

Galen Cisco - PC Checklist by Bowersbird
Last updated on Aug 26, 2023

This is to help me keep my Galen Cisco PC cards in order. Seems easier than constantly going back to his player page or going into my collection and my wantlist to get everything in the correct order.

August 16, 2023 Update: I added 17 team cards to the end of the list. Some only list his pitching stats, but use a photo predating his time on the particular team. But some, including essentially his entire run as a Royals coach, do have Cisco in them. For now, they're an addition at the end of the main list. But I might consider either splitting them off with other cameos or just fully incorporating them to order these chronologically within the full list.

2019 Allen & Ginter - Mini Frankenset by Bowersbird
Last updated on Jul 29, 2023

I'm not sure if this really counts as a Frankenset since it's all from the same year, but it's what I'll call it for now. Basically, I'm trying to complete a set of 2019 A&G minis where the base and any of the three main parallels can count toward the goal. I'm going to use this to keep track instead of adding every version of a card I don't have to my wantlist.

If you're looking to trade/sell any I don't have, I might be interested. My preference is as follows: Gold or Black Frame > Regular >>> A&G Back. Basically, I'm content with a regular or either framed kind - the A&G backs are fine to fill a hole, but I'm willing to trade those out for the right deal. (And any NNO, SN'ed, or other special mini is cool, but likely won't be stored as a part of the Frankenset).

Top 10 underrated early/mid '00s basketball sets by hoopscardsandmore91
Last updated on Jul 22, 2023

The early to mid-2000s is the most nostalgic era in basketball for me. Even though I grew up in New England, I was and still am a diehard Lakers fan. Especially given the current state of the team, I can't help but relish in the memories of the Shaq-Kobe dynasty. Over the years the Celtics did rub off on me and I have a bit of an identity crisis in cheering for both. Anyways, it was also an exciting era for the Cs with the Pierce-Walker duo (the shimmy!!). A shame they didn't make the Finals for a Lakers-Celtics matchup. Regardless, it was a great period for both of my teams.

There are so many other memorable events from this timeframe too. Future Hall of Famers' were near retirement and finding themselves on oddball teams - most notably Michael Jordan on the Wizards - but also Patrick Ewing on the Sonics/Magic and Hakeem Olajuwon on the Raptors. Vince Carter had an insane dunk contest performance in 2000. Yao Ming entered the league in '02 and aided internationalization of the sport. Oh, and I suppose there was a good rookie class in '03.

For all of these reasons and more a lot of my PC is focused on this era. It also happened to coincide with a great time in the hobby. There was a plethora of sets coming from multiple manufacturers, i.e., Fleer, Topps, and Upper Deck (the good 'ole days). While higher value sets like Topps Chrome and SP Authentic arguably garner the most attention, there are so many others that are appealing. So here is my list of exactly that - the top ten underrated early/mid '00s basketball sets (ranked in order). Note that TCDB requires you to pick a single card for a list, so I have selected the first card of each set for simplicity sake.

Honorable mention:

1999-00 Upper Deck HoloGrFX
2001-02 Fleer Maximum
2001-02 Topps High Topps
2002-03 Hoops Stars
2003-04 Fleer Platinum
2005-06 Topps Big Game
