Trivia

  • 1st set to include Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins cards.
  • First set that featured Checklists, League Leaders, and Topps Rookie All-Star trophy cards.

Hall of Fame rookie cards for Billy Williams, Juan Marichal and Ron Santo.

Set featured 6 different Mickey Mantle cards.
  • Frank Howard was named to the 1960 Topps All-Star Rookie Team but his #280 card is missing the trophy designation.
  • Cards #426, 587, and 588 were not issued.
#426 was supposed to be the Braves team; that card was instead issued #463 - the same as Jack Fisher.
  • Sherman Jones' card #161 is actually Eddie Fisher.

The card for Dutch Dotterer #332 shows his own brother Tommy instead.
  • First set to include the new Washington Senators, an expansion team to replace the team that moved and became the Minnesota Twins.
  • Packs of cards also contained two Topps Stamps. The stamps could be collected into an album which was available for an additional 10 cents.

A ton of "Hatless Wonders" in this set. Among the Twins, and expansion Senators and Angels, tough to find a guy with a hat. Or a hat that's not airbrushed.

This is the first set I 'completed.' I started as a kid when the cards were new and fortunately my mother never threw them away. Actually she never threw anything much away, but that's a different story. When the hobby got hot again in the early 1980s I got all my cards and eventually finished the set. It went in a binder and up on a shelf while I collected a lot of other things. Only recently have I thought about the errors and variations that have surfaced since I worked on the set, so I'm starting to track those down now.

I do have a question about card #461. It shows here as Smokey Burgess, but I have a Mickey Mantle Thrills card with that number. It's not shown as a duplicate number or error in the database. Ideas?

This set is from my birth year. Conservative but nice design.
The picture takes up most of the front which is nice.
