Year: 1983

Set: Donruss (Rate)

Card: #336 Steve Sax

“ Sax looks like he is about 14 years old here. What a great player. Remember him for the Yanks! I was excited when they brought him in. I can't get enough of the 80's cards, especially early 80's! ” -muskie027

“ Sax was the 1982 NL Rookie of the Year and one of the hottest young stars at the time. Had this whole set collected within a month of release. Hard to believe it's been over 34 years ago. ” -trauty

“ ...there's STILL a lot of unsolved murders in New York. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Except for the listless Sax the card is an attractive and effective card design - the logo is prominently displayed without it interfering and the bat and glove are used well to give player information. It's one of my favorite designs. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Donruss in the '80s wasn't too bad , nothing fancy but still classic looking .Sax looks like he wishes he was anywhere but on this card ! ” -uncaian

“ Were these licensed? ” -deporcoruña

“ Nice simple card. But, again, the back with its "recent major league performance" is simply bad. ” -NJDevils

“ Too cool!! ” -RoyalChief

“ Another early Donruss. Don't like this set because the design is almost identical to the '82 set. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Ah Donruss 1983 The first set of significant card size (larger than those small commemorative sets up to 50 cards or smaller sets that are 100 cards or less) where I purchased the entire boxed set. I think it was in late 84 or 85 that I actually bought it. I remember at the time the sets were only from $20-$30 for Fleer Donruss and Topps. I think I paid $20-$25 for the Donruss, Fleer was about the same maybe a little higher and the Topps I think was closer to $30 at the time. I should have bought all 3 at some point but never got the Fleer and Topps sets. Still building those sets like a zillion other sets. ” -captkirk42

deporcoruña - you could ask the same about the Topps set as well. The only company to actually put the MLB and MLBPA logos on the cards in 1983 were Fleer, but all three had licenses. It just wasn't required like it is today.

Hey Billy, your comment went over my head.  Can someone elaborate?

I missed it at first too, and did a quick Google search. It refers to an episode of The Simpson's where Sax voices himself. Actually a pretty funny comment once I understood the context lol.

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

Jason is right on. In the episode, all the regular characters are on the power plant softball team, and MLB players are brought in as ringers. All but Homer Simpson have their ringers fall victim to some malady. Sax is arrested because he is from New York and there are a lot of unsolved murders in NY. Ken Griffey Jr. Gets gigantism, Roger Clemens is hypnotized into thinking he's a chicken, Ozzy Smith falls into a bottomless pit, etc. All players played themselves. It's from the time when the Simpsons were at their very best.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I mean Billy is just talkin softball, from Maine to San Diego.  You know, Mattingly and Conseco. Griffeys swollen jaw and Ozzie and the Straw. Steve Sax had his run in with the law. Something along those lines lol
