Year: 2000

Set: Topps - MVP Promotion (Rate)

Card: #NNO Alex Gonzalez

“ Despite being pelted with golden bowls and fish, A-Rod was still able to field the company logo. ” -revnorb

“ A great card from the King of Topps MVP Promotion Cards! These cards are very, very tough to find- it's probably safe to say that many people don't know about them or have never seen them. Only 100 of each are said to exist. ” -Dave Sosidka

“ Ah, the elusive MVP Promotion cards. Still haven't seen an Olerud yet. ” -olerud363

“ I wish they would still honor these 17 years later. You know Topps still has a bunch of these unused redemptions in their inventory. ” -carthage44

“ A few too many things hiding the photo. And I'm not sure why this is numbered as #380. I don't see a number on the card. But maybe I'm just not familiar with this set, or it's just too small for me to see on my screen. ” -kents_stuff

“ This must be a PR card - Pre-Roid. ” -UKboogie

“ It's not a bad card, but the gray border is a little boring. ” -muskie027

“ In my opinion, the stamp ruined a perfectly good card front. The back explains it being a contest card though. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Is that the Alex Gonzalez, or the other Alex Gonzalez ” -rmitchell6700

“ What is this guy the MVP of? I don't get it. What if Topps used this for a Rediscover Topps gimmick.!?! Two foil stamps. Captain Kirk's head might explode! ” -switzr1

The number comes from the base card, which this is a parallel of.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Ah I missed the Random last week. Didn't log on soon enough. Plus was having a problem with my comcast intenet bundle (internet/cable TV/phone)

Back to the random card.I now like the 2000 Topps design, It was around my Hiatus from the Hobby (like a million other collectors that eventually came back) and when I did see it I placed it with the other overproduced years of the mid-to-late 1980s to mid 1990s. I tend to think of around 1986 to 2002 or 03 as those "overproduced years" now we are in the "short print" and "overused parallels and inserts" years. They call these Promotion cards, I call them contest advertisement cards. I don't see why they needed to make a parallel of every card in the set of these things.

I collect: Baseball, Football, Hockey, Mostly Vintage pre1980, My Homie teams - Washington/Baltimore Teams Senators (Twins, Rangers), Expos/Nationals, Redskins, Capitals, Bullets/Wizards - HOFers - Non-sport (mostly TV shows and movies).

My Trade List is very much a work in progress

Even though it is a aparallel to the base set, I don't think they should be numbered. If I don't have the parallel, I don't know what # to look for.  To me, they should be NNO.

I think some of us confused this player with Alex Rodriguez. I know alot of our hispanics names sound alike. But come on guys, Gonzalez? Rodriguez? LOL

Two foil stamps? Yep head blown. It makes one wonder what if someone sent them back an old buyback that was already stamped as a buyback? They would have to stamp it with the current buyback stamp making it a double buyback and if it were one of these stamped promo cards to begin with? I'm going back to bed wake me when Topps Heritage is using the 1999 design. wink

Kirk, now my head is spinning!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
