Year: 2003

Set: Topps Total (Rate)

Card: #64 Moises Alou

“ One of the bazillion or so Topps brand offshoots which further watered things down for collectors. I loved the simplicity of the front design. But see irony in the "Total" brand having just 1 year of stats. ” -kents_stuff

“ Topps Total has always made me ponder. Granted I was out of the hobby at the time, but wasn't the concept to feature every player on the 40 man roster....a TOTAL set of all players? Well 30 teams x40 players would be 1200 cards...yet we have a 990 card set with a whole whack of minor leaguers in A ball. Hardly seems TOTAL to me. ” -rmpaq5

“ Another blah Topps card. Too much white. They cut off his bat. Why do you need the black and blue border and then a white border around that? The back is even worse. As for Moises, just a warning, never look up how he kept from using batting gloves. If you have never heard the story, be thankful. ” -davidhandberry

“ Ah, Topps Total. A set that myself and many collectors wish Topps would resurrect. In terms of design and card stock, this year's Big League is close. But, in terms of scope of the set, not even in the same ballpark. ” -mkaz80

“ I like Topps Total most years, even if some of the elements I don't like for instance the team name isn't listed on the front but thankfully the team logo is there. Player name should be a little larger I think. Topps Total logo should be smaller. Player position would be a nice touch back is a bit crowded should probably be a horizontal landscaped back with full stats smaller area for all the legal copyright stuff. Not as many colors. Even with some of the gripes and ranting I love these sets. I need to make sure I have my complete teams and PC guys. I don't think I'll ever try for a totally complete set of any year of Topps Total (any sport) ” -captkirk42

“ He was really good for awhile. I like the design. Topps is due for a border set. ” -muskie027

While I didn't like the 2003 Total set, I did like the following years. Topps should have kept that brand going. It was a good product with nice designs and enough info to make the backs interesting to read. The parallels were easy to distinguish from base cards and the inserts were decent designs with obvious logic for each set name. I liked the NFL release more than the MLB release, but both were good for a few years (2003-2007 I think).

Lastly, thanks to this brand, I got many cards of players who rarely had cards in any other sets (especially in the NFL). I am STILL hunting for parallels of all years of Topps Total for my MLB and NFL PC's!

Wasn't a big fan of this set, but I do like large 1-series sets like OPC hockey.

I have to disagree with others on this. Topps Total was a great set for player and team collectors. For football, this set is up there with 1997 Pacific Philadelphia and 1998 UD Choice. It was offered at a low price point / geared for kids and included players that might never get another card. It wasnt flashy, maybe a few parallels, and not laden with autos or jerseys.
