That's the price for a package between 8 and 9 ounces. Packages start at $3.50 and cost increases by weight.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

C2, I am sure that the cost varies whether it is domestic or international. I know some of you south of the 49th parallel think there is nowhere else in the world but .... shhhh.... there is.
Just poking the bear, C2. I assume this is domestic within the continental USA. Does it not vary for distance? In Canada, it does.

No, not at that weight. Across country or across town, same price. And International packages start at $10.00.

I just mailed 109 cards in an 8.5x11 bubble mailer from NC, USA to NB, Canada for $4.90 as a large envelope today. I did it at the USPS office. The mailer fit all of the criteria to be shipped as a large envelope. It fit through the 3/4ths of an inch slot, was uniformly thick, contained only documents (cards are just paper and therefore qualify), and was flexible. There were 3 stacks of cards in there with almost exactly the same thickness. I fully expected to have to ship as a package. As I was filling out the Customs form, the clerk told me it should work as a large envelope. She also told me that as long as it has the printed postage from an office of the USPS, it almost always goes through as labeled. The package option would have cost me $16 to ship less than $14 worth of cards. BTW, the weight was 9.7 ounces. I'll update everyone when this package is delivered to either the recipient or back to me!

Just mailed two 9x11 bubble mailers each with 60 cards. One to NY, the next state over was $3.50. The next two Minnesota was $3.75. I asked the clerk why and she said "the distance". The post office totally puzzles me. I get different rates depending on he clerk.

I tried the photo mailer technique today, and my friendly neighborhood post office charged it as a $3.50 parcel. I debated with 3 different clerks saying it was well below 1/4 inch thick and didn't meet the size requirements of a package. They said it was pretty rigid, therefore parcel, end of story. Any truth to this? Are some photo mailers non rigid and cheaper to mail? Or did I get bad luck here?

many of the usps rules are 'interpreted' differently by different postal clerks
I try to mail my domestic ones at postal machine after hours so postal clerk is not involved.
On packages/padded mailers I use paypal postage, and PWE with non machinable surcharge I use postal machine.
