I have some vintage cards on my Want List that I KNOW I'll never buy because they're beyond what my wife would tolerate as an expenditure. (She gave me a hard time yesterday for spending $2.66 on postage for the second time this week.)
Anyway, I recently purchased a lot of about 5,000 cards from my neighborhood card shop in Jersey and included was a 1979 Topps #116 Ozzie Smith RC. It's in EX condition with a couple of issues, but still a great find in a lot I paid $55 for. Cards in the same basic shape are selling between $14.00-$28.00. I'd probably hold mid-range on that say about $17-$20.
The reason I'm torn is that I'll sometimes start collecting a player because I have their RC. And in Ozzie's case there weren't upmteen others like there are today. However, my Want List includes as I stated earlier many players who I'll never afford, BUT there may be some vintage ('50s-mid-'70s) that I may be able to get in trade for an Ozzie RC.
I'm really looking for a few players in particular that maybe their RCs in Good to EX condition may match in value. Here's a sampling of what I'd like to see if anyone has available to trade:
- 1933 Goudey #41 Gus Mancuso RC (Yeah, right! I'm certain if someone owns this card that they'll need an Ozzie RC!)
- 1952 Topps #2 Pete Runnels RC
- 1960 Topps #316 Willie McCovey RC (I passed up one for $25 that I regret back in March);
- 1962 Topps #598 Rookie Parade Outfielders RC, SP (It's the only card that would keep me from completing the '62 Colt .45s team set)
- 1966 Topps #126 Jim Palmer RC
- 1970 Topps #189 Yankees Rookies - Thurman Munson / Dave McDonald RC
- 1972 Topps #200 Roger Staubach RC
- 1973 Topps #89 Franco Harris RC
- 1984 Topps #123 Dan Marino RC
- 1971-72 Topps #55 Pete Maravich (2nd year card)
These are primarily the card-for-card type deals I'd envision trading the Ozzie RC for, but there are others on my Want List that would fit the bill.
If this interests you, and you have a need/want for this Ozzie RC. Let's talk deal! If there are no bites, the worse that can happen is that I begin collecting the Wizard of Oz cards now!

Sportzcommish,
Since I am an avid Ozzie "Wizard" Smith collector, if you do decide to sell the card I would love the opportunity to get another rookie card of his. Please DM me if you do decide to sell. Thanks

If you can get anyone to bite on the trades you suggested I'd dump the Ozzie for sure. I don't think any of the baseball cards are a value match in similar condition. The closest is actually the '33 Goudey.
- 1933 Goudey #41 Gus Mancuso RC $35-60
- 1952 Topps #2 Pete Runnels RC $150-250
- 1960 Topps #316 Willie McCovey RC $60-120
- 1962 Topps #598 Rookie Parade Outfielders RC, SP $40-80
- 1966 Topps #126 Jim Palmer RC $50-100
- 1970 Topps #189 Yankees Rookies - Thurman Munson / Dave McDonald RC $50-100
- 1979 Topps #116 Ozzie Smith RC $30-60
Those are all prices from the 40th Edition 2018 Beckett Baseball Card Price Guide. You'd certainly have to accept a card in much lesser condition for most of these. You really should have bought that McCovey rookie when you had the chance.

Ozzie fans can sometimes be a fanatical bunch. If there's one of them out there that still needs an Ozzie RC, they'd likely trade more than its perceived value just to get their hands on one. Mine is in at least NM-MT (8 of 10) condition, so I don't need another one in lesser condition. But I'd still consider buying it just to have another one. I don't have any of the cards you want in return for a trade.
If you ever come across the O-Pee-Chee RC in any condition, talk to me. That's been my "White Whale" ever since I got the Topps RC about a decade ago.

I guess I didn't communicate clearly the condition factor, and left it as implied. I would anticipate getting most of the cards in lesser, and much lesser, shape than what they'd receive in the Ozzie card.
And, yes, I kicked myself for passing up the McCovey RC just because the card owner was obnoxious and rude. A little less sentiment and I'd have owned my McCovey.

And, to prove my point, I just purchased a 1952 Topps #2 Pete Runnels RC that Beckett lists at $150-250 for $17.75 in fair condition.
So whoever was willing to part with their '52 Topps Pete Runnels, sorry, but it's off the table!
Anyone care to offer a 1952 Topps #351 Alvin Dark for the Wizard?

Sorry, I thought you were looking for better condition cards than the fair condition '52 Runnels you bought.
I'm really looking for a few players in particular that maybe their RCs in Good to EX condition may match in value.
Glad you got the Runnels to fill your needs. Now if I could only get those '52 High Number Cubs to complete my team set.

Nah, I mean, generally yes, but after looking at the '52 it pleased me enough to get me to fork over the cash, obviously if I had an opportunity to own a better condition card I'd get it, but I value my life (wife probably would plead insanity to killing me if I spent what even VG would cost on some of my Want List).
By the way, I have also secured a beat up '71 Topps Munson RC from a fellow TCDB member, and I still have my Ozzie RC! As a comedian used to say, "What a country!"

Cool! Looks like you're whittling down that want list and still hanging on to the Smith rookie. Just a question about trading on the site and card condition. Looks like you've made a bunch of treades through the website here. I've yet to make a trade. Still need to finish FS/FT and want lists. How do you handle conditions of cards in the trade process here? I have some vintage baseball cards (68-72) that I taped on to pages as a kid. Are people interested in cards like that with tape residue? Do you send scans of conditions pre-trade in cases like that?

Scans, as well as putting that info in the comments of the details for each card. You can also put condition in the details as well.
