Year: 1994

Set: Fleer (Rate)

Card: #229 Mike Gallego

“ Interesting design. I've never seen it before. I like how the name wraps around the team logo. The name appears to be done in foil, too. This design was not used in the NBA, which is unusual for the time, most of the companies tried to create an overall theme for each year. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Good job of camouflaging the stats on the back. ” -NJdevils

“ Yankees pinstripes. 'Nuf said. ” -jlaz10

“ He resembles a dictator of some sort. ” -revnorb

“ Leggo my Eggo, Gallego! ” -DanD

1994 Fleer is a beautifully clean design. Too bad the presses were set on infinity.

As a whole, I liked most of the looks of the sets in 1994.  It was also in my opinion the last great year of trading.  After the strike, the trading card industry as a whole suffered.  Because of that, they had to start (so they thought) adding insert sets by the bunches to bring the fans back.  I think it hurt the products more than it helped. Two or three insert sets are fine, but not fifty. Same goes with parallels. I could do without any parallels.  It was like they abandoned the collectors to appeal to the ones trying to make a profit and to kids, that without proper introduction to card collecting, will never become fans of the hobby.  Sorry, stepping off my soapbox.

A nice, clean design. I liked the Fleer sets in the early 90's.

It took me years to appreciate crazy amounts of inserts. Why do I love them now? Because after you've completed (or buy) the base set, there's something else to shoot for.

Funny you should say that, because after the first NBA Lockout the cards were never as much fun for me either. (The first lockout occurred during the 1998-99 season). The actual gameplay deteriorated as well. After the second lockout (2011-12) the gameplay has gone back to pre first lockout, but unfortunately, the cards are pretty much the same if not worse, due in large part to the fact that only one company has the license.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
