Year: 1992

Set: Upper Deck (Rate)

Card: #34 Willie McGee

“ I miss checklists. Although I prefer actual checklists to team checklists, I'd be happy for them these days. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ While I am a fan of the team checklist, I'm more of a fan of putting a team photo or even just the manager on the front (if you need a photo at all). Team records, last year's stats, all would work for me too. Not a fan of the artwork, though some were better than others. ” -vrooomed

“ The good old days! ” -carthage44

“ I like these team checklist cards but at first glance it is difficult to know which set they belong to since those first few years of UD looked alike. ” -captkirk42

“ Willie McGee will never look right in any uniform but the Birds on the Bat. Definitely one of my all time favorite Cardinals. ” -switzr1

“ The drawing of Candlestick in the background is a nice touch. ” -duaned99

So much to say about this. More about the comments than the card though. I liked the team checklists from the 90's, not for the cash value but for the info value. Those sets were up to 900 cards and the regular CL's just told the card # and player name. I will always think of Willie as a Cardinal too, but he also did pretty good in SF. The first few years of UD were easily distinguished by looking in the UD logo on front. The year is right there in the logo. I do like how everyone (except Topps) is now making it easier to find out what year/set the cards you pull are from. That is one thing that was always good about Fleer/Skybox and Pacific. I'm glad more companies make sure that you know what you have in your hand. If only Topps would do that with their cards, especially the reprint inserts they've pumped out the past several years!

When I read comments on the forum from people struggling to piece together an accurate checklist for the website, I think about how easy this was to do in the days where the checklist cards were a part of the set.  I think I still marked on mine through the 1986 season.  1987 was when condition first became important to me, apparently.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
