Year: 2011

Set: Topps - Super Bowl Legends (Rate)

Card: #SBL-XI Fred Biletnikoff

“ An otherwise fine card except the lack of a number. That is one of my "pet peeves" in the hobby. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ No frills, just a solid card. I don't mind that no particular element stands out. Not the greatest photo, but quite reasonable if it was the best available shot taken during Super Bowl XI. ” -dilemma19

“ Nice Insert card. I love Super Bowl cards. Ah back when the Raiders were real beasts. ” -captkirk42

“ I hate the Raiders, but Biletnikoff was one of the greatest. Just look at them hands...no gloves and still reeling them in. Oh, sweet card as well. ” -RoyalChief

“ at first glance I thought this was a ProSet from early 90s ” -NJdevils

“ Topps have always made an effort to include legends into their sets. ” -carthage44

“ Haven't seen these before, but I like it. Good looking photo, presumably taken during the game in the description. I like commemorative sets like this, and the design is good too. ” -switzr1

Good news--always good to see a card of one of my teams in this section.  Bad news--it was NOT taken from the game mentioned since the Raiders wore their road whites.

Well that changes my opinion of the card drastically. Thanks for the info P Dawg.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Re:  Billy's comment about NO Number, um yes these cards do have a number Roman Number following the SBL.

BTW: the checklist seems to be missing a few cards, or Roman Numerals don't correlate correctly. Looks like the last card is SBL-XLV aka Super Bowl 45 which is correct SB45 would have been five years ago 2011.

Seems to be missing cards from SBs 7,8,10,12,17,22,26,31,32, and 37 Total card count should be 45, the list is at 35. The players featured are the MVP from that Super Bowl on the card correct? (even if the photo is not from the game). So someone with checklist editing permissions could add the missing cards, and look up the players if they don't have the cards or know offhand who the MVP was.

Yes, Biletnikoff was a great one.   No gloves, but a ton of stick'um up to his elbows.  A lot of guys  did back then.

That makes sence. So few people use Roman numerals these days that when I saw it I just automatically figured it was just letters thrown together to make the "number". Kind of embarrasing that I missed that considering how much time I spend studying the actual Roman Empire. The fact that I know (almost) nothing about football played a very large role in that.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Looking up the set, it is only 35 cards and missing some Super Bowls. The checklist is correct.

That is OK, Yes it does look like one of those "name as the number" things. Traditionally the NFL uses the Roman Numerals to number the Super Bowls, that is except for this years 50th. In part I guess to it being the big FIVE-OH, but mostly because they decided that the Roman "L" for 50 wouldn't work well with the logo branding or some silly such reason. Maybe even because of the fact that most people now-days can't figure out Roman Numerals.

I hope next year for Super Bowl 51 they go back to the Roman Stuff. If not it might go the way of cursive writing. I hear they aren't teaching cursive "script" writing in school anymore. Blam modern technology for replacing hand written materials. If it continues then in two or three generations no one will be able to ready anything from before the late 20th century.

Before anyone updates the checklist, do we know for a fact that they used each MVP?  There are autographed versions of these.  Maybe they only used players they could get autographs from.  Additionally, SB12 had co-MVPs, so there had actually been 46 MVPs at that point in time.  MVPs not on this checklist (using Captkirk's list as a guide) are:

7 Jake Scott (only 2011 card was from an autographed Tri-Star award winners set.  In fact, about half of the missing names from the Topps set were in this TriStar set in 2011.  Probably an exclusive deal.)

8 Larry Csonka (no Topps cards since 2004)

10 Lynn Swann (no Topps cards since 2001)

12 Harvey Martin (deceased) & Randy White (Panini and TriStar in 2011)

17 John Riggins (no Topps cards after 2002 until 2014)

22 Doug Williams (Panini only; no Topps cards since 2002)

26 Mark Rypien (no card appearances at all since 2002)

31 Desmond Howard (only 2011 card was from the same TriStar set as Jake Scott)

32 Terrell Davis (too many to look at, but was in the TriStar set in 2011 and had no Topps cards that year)

37 Dexter Jackson (hard to say because there are two different Dexter Jacksons combined on one page, But the Super Bowl MVP had only one card appearance in 2011, and that was the TriStar set)

Based on this info, I think the checklist is probably accurate.
