Year: 2011

Set: Topps Gypsy Queen (Rate)

Card: #200 John Lackey

“ Lord help me, I should hate these. But I don't. I kinda love them. And now I have all of them, but the shortprints. And I love Lackey. No fiercer competitor. And now a Cub. Good card. ” -Vvvergeer

“ I've never collected Gypsy Queen. This doesn't make me want to start. The front isn't bad, but the back is lacking. I like stats, why can't there be any? Why is Gypsy Queen written so big and the name and team so small? Why can't we even get Lackey's full first name. Pass. ” -muskie027

“ Retro Card of the Day. I like it. When Gypsy Queen first came out I didn't like it. I thought he premiere design was awful at the time. I think that was the one that was black on gray or gray on black. Since then I have liked most years, but like with A&G I am now tired of everything getting a mini version. ” -captkirk42

“ I'm not sure what it is, but I really like the visual effects Gypsy Queen uses on player pictures, but not their logo. It seems like it's an artist's draft or some creepy lettering for a horror flick. Therefore I steer away from them. Maybe they should enter the Walking Dead market then I might consider them. ” -Sportzcommish

“ He's one ugly dude. He's up there with Eric Plunk as terrible looking guys. Solid pitcher despite the looks, LOL! ” -carthage44

“ I know many collectors like these. I simply am not a fan of GQ ” -NJDevils

“ One of the sets I love. They seem to have a clean painting look to them. Plus, if you are able to get the different colored parallel it can bring out the colors and catch your eye! ” -Joshua825

“ Love the shading and colouring on this card. Looks like something from back in the day. ” -Kirokyukan

“ Big fan of the Gypsy Queen sets. Much like Allen and Ginter's, they make great signature cards. ” -jasongerman9

So, I'm fine with people hating these. Hypocritically, I don't like throwback cards, as a rule, but I've come to enjoy GQ. Part of it is that the original set is so old, I'll never get one. I can get a 1964 Topps, so I don't need a Heritage version with Mike Trout. The rest is that these cards are different from the regular issue. It's not just a new picture.

To answer some fair criticism from above--Muskie, I think--there's no first name because the original GQ didn't have first names. Same for the stats. I'm less interested in another picture of a guy with the same stats and info. These purport to be different. I might go for Allan and Ginter some day for the same reasons.

I wish there was GQ in basketball. I really like the design especially the lettering. I mean Topps did Archives way back in 92-93 adopting baseball designs and Panini is doing it with Donruss right now. We need GQ or I might have to start collecting baseball. Never mind the fact that Topps is no longer doing basketball.
