I went to my local
Kmart today, and
naturally visited
their small card
section. Our local
Kmart is known for
not really staying
up to date on card
releases, but I did
set a new record
for oldest cards
seen at retail-
they had a set of
the 1990-91 Fleer
Update (NBA) set on
the shelf! Issued
in 1991, it now
sets the record for
oldest cards I've
seen at retail at
23 years old. The
previous record is
the pack of 2001
Upper Deck Golf
cards my Target had
last year, which is
somewhat surprising
as they only opened
in 2004.

I bought a set of
the 1987 Fleer
Baseball Minis at a
local Meijer store
so it'd be 23 years
also.

They don't sell any older boxes at my local Target or Walmart, but some of the mixed pack boxes will have older cards in them. Had an 87 Topps baseball rack pack in one the other day. I wish they had older obscure boxes, I'd definitely buy them.

Yeah I bought one like suomibear described at Target this year with a 1990 Score Rookie/Traded plus some Singles in a see-through package. Not sure if that counts.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I think so. I was
quite surprised
when I received one
of those plastic
clamshells with 50
loose cards in it
for Christmas this
past year and
pulled out a 1973-
74 Topps card! I
have not scanned it
yet, but it was
new. I've gotten
cards from 1981-82
Topps out of them
on a few occasions,
but I have already
completed the set
so they go into the
duplicates/trade
stash box(es)

I have pulled a 1978 football card out of one of those clamshell 50 card repacks just recently. I've also found 2001 Topps Golf cards in the $1.00 pack box at Fred Meyers before. However, I haven't found any 23 year old boxes of cards on a shelf. Incredible find.

As far as advertised products, our local Kmart had several different 1988 baseball sets available within the last year. As far as individual cards pulled from clamshells or similar type packages at those stores, I have gotten 6 baseball and 1 football card from the 50's from packages at our local Shopko. Of course, none of them were anything but commons, but at that age, even commons are worth a decent amount of money, especially when they are in as good of shape as these were.
