If money were no object, and it were more about the chase and the hunt, which set would you want to put together?

Wow, with me being
all over the map
and collecting
literally
everything, I'd
have to narrow it
down to non-sport
or a specific
sport. If I every
get all my
inventory entered
(and quit buying
more), maybe I will
start targeting
some sets.
Unfortunately, I
thing I will never
have the luxury of
an unlimited
budget! Fun to
think about though
and I will be
pondering this
question (for each
and every
category)! Anxious
to hear what others
would target...

Dear Admin.,
Thought of another
change...I (once
again) was quick to
hit post and should
have said "think",
instead
of "thing"...an
option to edit a
your post, if not
too difficult to
add, would be
useful! Thanks,
Brian

Easy one for me. 1957 Topps baseball. First cards I ever bought. I remember opening a pack and seeing my idol, Yogi Berra, smiling back at me.

Great question! After five minutes of deep meditation I am thinking 1997-98 Flair Showcase Basketball. All Rows. Of course I could go with the Legacy or Masterpiece Collection as long as I am still dreaming, but I like the gold lettering on the non-paralell sets. Why 1997-98? If anyone asks, it is the draft class. 1998-99 did have Vince Carter and others, but that is the only thing it has over the previous edition. Also "1997-98" has more complete stats compared to the 1996-97 edition, which features the same "backside" on all cards of all Rows.

Being an old school football fan(atic), I'd have to go with 1952 Bowman large football set.
So many of the all-time greats appear in that set. I know its an exaggeration, but it seems like every card features a Hall of Famer.

I love the 1957 Topps Baseball set. If not that one, the 1951 Bowman.
1951-52 Parkhurst in Hockey.

Excellent thread
topic MAS! As my
favorite time
period for cards is
the mid 1990s, most
of the cards in
that time period in
theory would be
collectable even on
a limited budget.
(despite my large
collection, I'm
always strapped for
cash...especially
now that I have to
spend several
hundred dollars on
insulin every
month). 1996-97 is
my favorite year
for the NBA, there
are only a few
truly expensive
cards, and only a
couple stand out as
stoppers (The Kobe
Bryant Topps
Chrome/Topps Chrome
Refractors stand
out). So that's
really more of
a "someday" instead
of a "can only
dream about" thing.
For NASCAR my
favorite year for
cards is 1994, and
I can't think of a
single card from
the year too
expensive to make
it prohibitive. I
already have most
of the 1970s NBA
cards, which I
viewed as
impossible dreams
when I began
collecting; NASCAR
cards only date to
1988 for the most
part, and I'm about
12 away from
completing the
first set. 1948
Bowman comes to
mind, as do 1957-58
Topps and 1961-62
Fleer. I know that
all three of those
sets have cards
I'll not be able to
afford unless I win
the lottery- George
Mikan, Bill Russell
and Wilt
Chamberlain RCs
respectively. They
are in the running.
The 1972 STP set,
which I believe may
be the first ever
NASCAR set, is cost
prohibitive (each
card usually goes
for about $200) but
it's only a small
set, about 12 cards
if I recall
correctly. So I
can't settle on
that one. But,
weighing all
options...I'm going
to have to go with
1984-85 Star. The
middle of the big
three Star sets of
the 1980s, it's a
long set, including
most of the players
in the league at
that time, which is
a plus- and I
already have
several dozen cards
from it.
However...it also
includes some team
sets/players that
will forever be out
of reach. It
includes the first
cards of Michael
Jordan, Hakeem
Olajuwon, Charles
Barkley, John
Stockton, and
others. (I actually
have the Utah team
set with the
Stockton RC- one of
my key cards!) The
Jordan card alone
tends to sell for
about what my
family paid for our
Jeep. I know I'll
never have it. Many
of the players in
the set are players
who were still in
the NBA when I
discovered the
sport in February
1996, and if not, I
soon learned about
them from getting
other cards from
before I began
collecting, so I
feel like I grew up
with them- after
all, a large part
of my life has been
revolving around my
card collection! I
can't guarantee I
won't think of
something different
later though. Great
topic!

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Also, it would be
pretty darn amazing-
and probably
impossible- to
complete a set
composed entirely
of 1/1 parallels.
I'd have to say
1999-00 Topps Gold
Label Red Label
Class 2 (they could
have made that
easier!) because I
pulled my first 1
of 1 from that
set...but any of
them would be
pretty amazing to
behold. I have 8 1
of 1s from
different sets, and
I've never seen a
single other card
from any of the
sets.
