I bought a box of cards of old cards at an auction. A lot of 1954 Bowman, a few 48 Bowman, a T206 or two, even a 55 Bowman Mantle. Now the creme de la creme of the box was a 33 Goudey Babe Ruth that appeared in absolutely mint condition. Well there was an opening bid which I thought was ridicoulously low so I made then next bid. Then there were no bids after that which may have been my first clue but at the time I was too excited due to winning. I submitted three cards from the box to be graded.
33 Goudey Babe Ruth - Came back as counterfeit
41 Double Play 57 (Ted Williams) and 58 (Jim Tabor) - Came back as altered (I don't see anything)
55 Bowman Mantle - PSA 2 I think it presents much better. A dealer I know said it should have been a 4 and I was actually hoping for a 5 so a 2 was a bit dissappointing.
I'm actually ok about the Mantle as it was one of my childhood holy grail cards. Was I ripped off, probably not all the cards combined were close to what I paid but damn if I"m not feeling upset at "over paying" for the box.
