What about those years when Topps retired #7? Ok, granted most people here are putting vintage into page, not late 90s-early 00s, but does trip the math up. With that said I always did use that trick in my previous collecting life. When I was putting a set in tha twas another check for me to see if I was missing a card or out of order. I would do a few pages f sliding cards in and them verify I was on track by doing that trick. If I was off I ould back track to see if it was a missing card I previously overlooked or just out of sequence (cards swapped) when being pulled from the box.

Tired and trembling I am descending, will I have to stay here and live this life again?

Gee whiz. I am just a small town country boy grade 12 graduate from Saskatchewan and I figured that out. Didn't need to go to higher schooling.
Seriously, as for sets that have # s not issued, I leave that pocket either empty or with a self-made card saying "# not issued".

What kind of allowances are made for cards with variations/errors? That would also wreck havoc on using the math trick to locate cards on the page. Wouldn't you store variations side by side to do comparison or leave them all until the end so as not to mess with the sequencing trick? Or do you just bypass variation/errors altogether?

My Autograph Collection Website Emphasis is on the 1969 Cubs. This is still a work in progress as is my collection here at TCDB. Value what you collect, don't collect for value.

If at the time I am putting a set in pages, I will include any variations in the binder. If received afterward, I will not put the variation in the binder because it is far too much work to shift the cards down

If I do pick up some of the variations / errors (and they have to be significant ones, not just a copyright date is missing), I would have a page(s) for these either at the begining or end (preferred) for them. Therefore the set cards would still be numerical from 1 to the end.

I put variations at the back of my albums with a little note as to what the variation is. I'm not picky as to what one ends up in the back as long as I have one of them in the regular set pages.

I put the variations in the same pocket back to back.

I've always put them in the same pocket back to back also. Luckly I have not run into a card with more than one variation...yet.

If I did, the third would wind up in the back.

Another reason not to collect variations. But once I get a complete set, I resort it into teams, anyway, so the number trick won't help. I keep them in number order only while I'm working on them.
