General Forum

The only set I've completed more than once was 1991 Maxx, the most common NASCAR set ever,  but a favorite of mine. I ended up giving one of the sets away as a Secret Santa gift on a NASCAR forum. I don't remember where the third set went off to. It might be in my storage unit somewhere still. 

I got them both when my local NASCAR store closed and gave me every card in the shop, which ended up being more than 2000 cards. Unfortunately about 90% of them were stored loose in buckets and damaged. The ones in binders were all duplicates, of course. 

I think for me it was because my small town had so few cards available to buy growing up.  When all I could buy were Topps, Donruss, and Score.  What else do you do?  I remember the little pharmacy we had had 88 Fleer for a bit but limited purchases to two packs.  Thankfully the school bus stop was right across the street so I got mine nearly everyday, lol!  When the supply is limited what else do you do but finish one and start another.

I guess my answer is typical. I have so many, why not? But, it does depend on what set. I could put together another 1989 Topps set but it's not worth it to me. I'm fixing to start on a 1991 Bowman second set. It at least has better rookies. I lucked out when I bought a dozen grab bags and ended up with at least a couple hundred. Sooooo.....lol

I've acquired other collections only to find additional sets of something I already had. I've always said someday I'll try to sell them. Someday I may try. When I got back into collecting a couple of years ago I also bought some old packs cheap to build a second set with my then 7 year old son. I'm working harder to limit my intake now until I do more to manage what I already have. 

Another good reason for completing the second or third set.   Let's say a set has 660 cards and you have 658 of them.  You have 658 doubles which is not good.   But get those last two cards and now you have "a set".  Much more impressive

While I am not a set chaser, I attempt to get three of every Hawkeye card so someday my kids will have an intrical piece of me. I organize my cards in three "sets" so that it is equal and when I pass my children will have reminders of my passions in life. Will not be worth much in dollar value, but hope it means more to their heart than their pocketbook anyways.
