I didn't get to see him play much, seeing as how I was an NL guy and his prime being just before I really got into baseball. But what I saw was good. The more I look at it and think about it, Bill Freehan should really be in the Hall of Fame. RIP, Sir. I shall now e-review my Freehan collection, which should consist of virtually all of his Topps cards -- you know that company that used to dominate the baseball card world...

my dad was briefly a low minor league catcher in the Tiger Organization in the late 50's,
Bill Freehan was the first MLB player I ever heard of.

He should really be in the HOF. Did you know he was an 11 time All-Star? I never knew that before and now I think those are worthy numbers to be in the HOF if you ask me! Espically for a catcher too.

I love the e-review statement. I think that is amazing. But RIP.

Yeah, I've gotten in the habit of looking at the In Memorium section here every day (although I found out about Freehand separately). Then I'm too lazy to pull out all the binders, but I go through my collection gallery for the deceased player. It's quite handy. Looks like I'm missing a couple Freehans...

I never got to see him play or meet him, but as a fan of both Michigan and the Tigers he has a special place in my collection. I know he doesn't have the counting stats to make it to the Hall (which is very hard to do as a catcher) but his contributions to the Tigers and UM were enormous, and I hope to see more people mention that they're now aware of how good he was since his passing.

Those non-stats are really important for catchers - how he handled pitchers, calling games, holding/catching baserunners, and the like. But he wasn't bad as a batter either. Someone in the eras committee would be the way for him to get in. He did play for a few great Detroit teams. Apparently there are 10 of 13 catchers ranked ahead of him in bWAR are in the Hall, so you never know.

Technically yes, Carlton Fisk and Ted Simmons, not saying they are in the HOF because of their 1960's catching (and you could say the same about Yogi and Bench). Same for Joe Torre who's early years were at C.
