I paid considerably more than four dollars for my Lou Brock rookie, also around 1986...

As surprised as you will all be, its not my Ranford PC ........ its my Oiler RC PC that I hold the most dear. I have about 70% of every Oiler player, pick, etc in sleeves and cases. My two top picks would easily be my Wayne Gretzky RC and my McDavid Young Guns that I just pulled a while ago, the story for both I will never soon forget. =)

I've been thinking about it - and although I have several just really cool cards, and some I've paid a decent amount for, the one that stands out:
1957 Topps Hank Aaron
Given to me
When I was about 11 or 12, I got a bunch of 1950s (51-57) from an old lady at my church who's son had collected. She knew I collected and she got out the old shoe box and I was in awe looking through them. She said, "If you would like some, you can have them". I said that honestly, I wanted all of them, but I'd only pick out a few. I set aside as many Phillies as I could find and a few "Names I recognized" (aka, HOFers or future HOFers). Most were in bad condition because they had tape on them (he must've had them taped in a book), but they still were some sweet cards. Some examples:
- 1951 Bowman - Whitey Ford RC, Garagiola, Boudreau, Feller, Rizzuto, Ted Williams
- 1952 Topps - Doby, Duke Snider
- 1953 Topps - Jackie Robinson
- 1954 Bowman - Don Larsen
- 1955 Bowman - Eddie Matthews
- 1956 Topps - Banks, Matthews, Jackie Robinson, Spahn
- 1957 Topps - Berra, Frank Robinson, & Aaron
The best part, the 1957s were in really nice shape. Anyway, when I got home, I looked in my SCD and saw the values and nearly fainted. I told my mom, and I called the lady up and explained that I had to return them, they're worth too much (and told her some of the price guide values - these were cards in the $400 range at the time!). She said, no, I said you could have them. And I still have them.
Aaron leads off my HOF binder #1. A wonderful card.
My 1974 Schmidt is a nice one, too!

Did Ranford start out with a different team? I just assumed he started with the Oilers.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Sounds a little like me switching from a Celtics fan to Pacers when I got old enough to drive to games. I'm 100 miles from downtown Indianapolis. I'm 1,000 miles from Boston. As a kid, when the Celtics were always on TV, and living near Terre Haute where Larry Bird went to college, it made sense to be a Celtics fan. As an adult who wanted to go to games, and as a Celtics fan who couldn't stand Antoine Walker or Paul Pierce, it made sense to switch to the Pacers!

Crap I mis-read that!! DOH .... and I revealed my big secret on here!! LOL Man its getting late ..... You meant the player Ranford not me, yup I AM shaking my head. Bill started out as a Boston Bruin but got traded to the Oilers in the Andy Moog trade. He was then traded back to the Bruins in 95-96. I never really paid Bill much attention until he won us the Cup with his freestyle craziness in 1990 against his original team (OUCH) the Bruins.

OK, sorry about that. Now your answer makes a little more sense. I meant the actual Bill Ranford. If his RC isn't your favorite card, but your Oilers rookies are your favorite cards, my logical mind deduced that he, Bill Ranford, was on a different team on his rookie card. Don't worry, I won't tell everyone that Ranfordfan used to be a Flyers fan!

I always thought Ranford was a Bruin as I remember him on a Bruins card?
