I have seen that many of you have multiple collections. I understand how to make a new collection and how to move cards between them. My question is why do you do this? What benefits do you get from using this option? Just trying to learn how to maximize the tools within this terrific database. Thanks!

Many people find it easier to segragate their collections into parts so they are logical and easier to manage their entire collection. For myself, I have a Collection for each sport and everything I do for that sport (have/wants) is done there. My PC is in a separate collection and my traders are in another. I found when I had everything together, especially with the traders and PC mixed in, it was harder for me to track what I was working with.

Me personally, I have had 2 collections. One is my collection and the other is my mom's collection. However, I currently have a third collection that I am still adding to that are part of a collection I recently acquired. I am putting them there until I get sorted through them all.

Matt Kenseth card collection is nearing 50% with over 2300 different cards. Always looking for the missing remainders to get to 100% completion.

I broke my collection into four seperate collections; base sets, sub sets/parellels, my team PC and my player PC. I am primarily set building and was getting tired of navigating through multiple pages 1 through 10. By removing everything from my main collection, and putting them in the other three collections, there are only two pages, page 1 and 2 to navigate. It might not be the best for everyone, but it works for me.

I couldn't stand seeing a whole lot of green with my blue and red, so I moved all my tradeable cards into a different collection to cut down on the visual noise. I also am not a set collector, so mixing my Red Sox cards with my Hall of Famer cards would just jumble up the totals when I look at certain set summaries. I'd rather just see how many Sox I own of each set to get an idea of what might be kicking around somewhere in my card binders.

I have my Shaq collection, my Archie Manning collection, my Saints collection, and my other is all of the cards I have for trade. It makes it easier for me to look things up.

I collect cards for different purposes, and some cards wind up in multiple places (as in, if you look at 1979 Topps baseball, I have cards for my Phillies collection, cards for the HOFers, and then the complete set. Additionally, there can be cards of multiple players (League Leaders, etc.) that could go to multiple collections, this is why I broke out each HOFer into a separate collection. So a card of Jim Rice and Dave Winfield would go in 3 collections - set, JRHOF, and DWHOF. This way, when I put a card on the want list, I know where it's supposed to go.

The only time I have used a separate collection was for the same reason as below — sorting out another collection I had bought and not wanting to incorporate it straight away in to my existing collection (both physically and electronically).

I have several collections for many of the reasons already stated. Some of these may suit you; others may not.
A Traders collection - everything you have for trade goes in there so that it does not clutter any other collection.
A Sets collection - easy to see what sets you have started. Mine is broken down into individual collections by Major Brand name. Because I have so many sets completed or started, it minimizes the amount of pages I need to scroll through to find a particular set in any one collection.
A PC collection - very similar to what Dan said but I don't break down each player into its own collection. I would only do that if I could have "sub-collections" within a collection. I do use the Comment field to let me know in which collection a multi-player card is if I collect more than one player featured on the card.
I then have Non-sport collections, and those other sports I don't collect but have traders of.
The Main Collection remains empty as that is where all cards coming in via trade get dropped in. I then move them to the collection I want them in.

Interesting subject! Myself, I have nine collections. The main collection is for trading and I list all my wants & traders there (plus one player I collect - 5 cards). I also have seven files for the players I collect, plus one for complete sets. Incomplete sets are left in the main collection until completed, then I move those to the complete set collection. This way, when I make trades they all appear in the main collection and I can transfer them individually to the proper collection, It works for me, and I hope the explanation is understandable.

I do not sell/buy cards, my sell/trade lists are for trade only. Thanks for your understanding.
