Ever wonder how many sets are out there that could possibly be added to the site?
How about different players?
Out of curiosity I researched the below. Do not know how correct it is but just curious.
TCDB is Trading Card DB
SCF is Sportscardforum

I'm not sure the SCF numbers are accurate. There have been only roughly 4000 NBA people to get cards...that number does not count college or WNBA people, but I can't imagine that there are nearly 10,000 of them combined that got cards but not NBA cards.
A lot of people in racing who only got one card don't have a PID yet so that may be accurate. I'm curious if their racing sets listed include street cars? (which should not be under racing) Myself, Spazmatastic and Lea DeFoote have made sure that all NASCAR sets are listed, at least all the mainstream ones. There are a few oddballs, regionals and the like not listed yet but I know for a fact it's not more than 2000 sets- it's not even 200. (The sets I'm aware of but aren't listed due to lack of checklists can be counted on your fingers- and I am building checklists for 4 of them, hopefully to be posted by summer). That leaves other forms of racing, though. I've listed as many as I can and I know I am not the only one working on them, but again, I don't think it's possible that many are missing.
I have to wonder if they are counting each name seperately? For example, three different names have been used for one person in NASCAR- William, Bill and Billy Stavola are all the same person yet cards exist under all three names.
I have three MMA cards that aren't listed because I don't even know where to begin looking for a checklist for them. I have a couple of hundred non-sports cards that aren't listed because I can't find checklists. This is all still a work in progress but every day more progress is made.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I also wonder what constitutes a set on that site. They may include things that we don't, like action figures. I have no idea. I have trouble believing that there are over 800 wrestling sets missing from our site. Especially when you factor in that they only have about 1/2 the number of wrestlers listed. I know about all the Russian unlicensed WWE sets, which we don't include, but there aren't nearly that many of them, and they don't have insert sets and parallel sets (that I'm aware of) to drive the numbers up either. I'm not trying to dispute Avs' findings. I am merely, like Billy, questioning the source.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

The SCF #'s are completely inaccurate. Here is why:
#1 - There is NO info listed on SCF for Multi-Sport, Non-Sport, Misc. Sport and Boxing. All of those cards are padding the numbers for each of the other sports. IE: A multi-sport set listed here is split b/t every sport they have listed (such as the early-90's Classic Four-Sport releases).
#2 - In general, the SCF player numbers are two-thirds of the total set numbers. BUT Hockey and Soccer list more players than sets.
#3 - Other than Soccer, SCF lists hundreds to thousands more sets than TCDB for every sport. There is no way that we are that far out on the numbers. This goes back to #1, where they probably list multi-sport releases in every sport instead of listing it as a multi-sport release. I would love to see how (or if) the Americana sets are listed on SCF.
I am now curious to see these stats put beside of Beckett stats. I would do it myself right now but it is late and I need to go to sleep. Work sucks much more when you don't get enough sleep! ;-)

After a quick search I think I found at least one major reason for the discrepancy between # of players. Looks like SCF took some of their earlier checklist straight from beckett, like the DB did esp around 2005. Where you have players names with qualifiers like the team they were on. Example: Roger Clemens Yanks-Astros. So if you search for player Roger Clemens is different from Roger Clemens Yanks-Astros and that's two different players. I'm sure this was similar throughout the sports on the site. The DB still has a bunch of this spread throughout, I know I've been working to cleaning up the 2005 checklists for over a month.

Although I'm not sure how to pull all those numbers out of the SCF database, so who knows.
