What types of modern cards are going to "survive" the current era and be consistently desirable over time?

I think the cards that will stand the test of time are #1 rookies (that's base cards,auto, game used, SN and so forth #2 autographs of HOFers #3 vintage 1980 and before #4 pre war cards. Even the cards made in the 1880's are still pretty much in demand even now over 100 years later

Rookies of prominent players mostly. Autographs. That's all i see really. Too many inserts and paralles to differentiate those.

I think older guys like me will contine to like the Topps Heritage brands in baseball. I do wish they would go back to 1952 designs and go through the 50s and 60s again, but not sure if they will...

I would like to see a series of Heritage done in Basketball and Football when Fanatics gets those licenses in the future.

I don't see very many Heritage baseball in the earlier years of 2001-2007 or so in trade lists here when I browse for my team....I am not sure if the print run was much smaller, or that most of the heritage in thoese years says in personal collections (as opposed to last few years seems like print run higher)

on a similar note, I would like to see the Archives brand experiment with using some of the basketball or football designs of past decaded in archives baseball as something different..

I've got to agree with Dan in almost every way with this reply! Base cards from the 1980's and 1990's are starting to become sought after again, even though they were massively overproduced and that was before the pandemic started. But they still haven't gained any value since then. Cards from 2010 will take at least another 10-20 years to have way more desirability. Cards from 2020 will take even longer due to the sheer numbers printed. The farther we get into this century, the more copies of every single card gets produced. Even SN'd parallels will hold no more value than a base card eventually. I personally couldn't care less for my team sets if the card is a base, or blue, or purple, or neon green, and so on, parallel. For specific players, I'll chase them all a little bit, but I'm not chasing every version for the random team players.

The SP VARs are going to hold wherever they land at the end of the next season - so cards issued in 2019 will stay where they were at the end of the 2020 season - with the exception of any "pandemic prices". Those will normalize back down a bit. As someone else mentioned, base sets will hold their ground. Collectors will get to the point where if they have the base, green, blue, or whatever color, that will be "good enough", so the rainbow chases will end (for most collectors - there will still be super-collectors, as there have always been).

Traditionally, RCs have always held their ground, but only the true star players. I'm pretty sure, even going to the 1970s sets that were before the over-production era, one can find rookies that were more flash in the pan for reasonable prices (comparing them to common cards from the same set). Same will hold true 10-20 years down the line for today's players. We cannot guarantee any of the players who have RCs in the last 5 years yet. They will have to remain healthy and have solid careers - like Pujols, Molina, Trout, and Cabrera have done, to name only a few. As an example, Acuna was one of the hottest cards before his unfortunate injury. As much as I hope for his sake he has a full recovery from it, what if he doesn't? His cards will plummet, and those who paid big bucks for his early cards will be sitting on what amounts to commons or only slightly better than commons (much like Jose Fernandez cards these days).

Hopefully, no one has bought any cards in the last 20 or so years thinking that what they bought will help them finance property, an education, or retirement. Very few lucky people will have that luxury.

Soon enough, it will be back to just us nerds again. Says one of the biggest nerds of all. :)
