There are times when I think I am desperate enough to try it. I think it would be cool if there were some professional sorting company, however the logistics of getting a large lifetime collection to them is frieghtening. I have been disappointed in myself for the last 16 or 17 years aboutt my collection's lack of proper overall organization. Don't ever start a massive reorganization then stop somewhere half way and then move while the reorg is still "in process".
I often wonder how a sorting company would operate. Obviously there would have to be enough collectors who are willing to have others handle their collection. The responses to in this thread seem to indicate that there are very few. Yet there are many collectors who are compfortable enough to have some of their cards sent to grading companies to get graded and slabbed. As I said getting the cards to them would be a problem.Shipping a full collectionn is costly and the larger the collection the higher and more ridiculous the costs. If the company was big enough a local offices could in theory pick up the collection to sort. There should also be a basic "menu" of how they are to sort the cards, at least 3 options: The obvious by year/brand/set/card number, Alpha by player last name, Alpha by Team name or team's city. For alphabetical options there need to be rules for mulit-player cards, team specific cards, league leader cards, subset cards.. Also would the company just strictly sort and box or would they also take the time of offer placing the sorted cards into binders before returning? Would they be penny sleeved/ Toploaders as well? Each project would have specifics for just that collection.
To be honest if I were to have someone else organize my collection first they would have to local to me. Maybe even more local than the general DC area. They would have be show that they are reliable in handling cards, no teenagers soriting cards while eating.
Now having someone assist with the sorting might work
