I have two general questions for the group regarding the 1990 "Blackless" error cards that exist and looking to spawn some discussion:
1) I know that folks on the site are not big on cataloging "printing flaws", and the 1990 Thomas is perhaps the most famous of those. However, there are a total of 13 cards that were affected by the same flaw, including the Thomas. I'm personally not sure why Thomas is the most famous, as he is not the only Hall of Famer affected (Carlton Fisk and Craig Biggio also have errors) or the only one missing a portion of the name (Marcus Lawton...ok, I guess I can see Thomas being more sought after than this guy). Anyway, how do the members feel about adding the other 12 cards that were affected? They are generally impossible to find as most people don't even know to look for them, so this may bring a few of them onto the market.
2) The image for the 1990 Thomas NNOF is not accurate. It is either a reprint or a fake. The actual error card is missing a large portion of the black border around the name box as well. To anybody considering purchasing one of these cards, that's one of the easiest ways to spot a fake. Even if somebody was careful enough to remove the portion of the black border, they usually forget the small black dot (which is part of the F in Frank, and all that made it through the blockage that stopped the black ink).
Anyway, looking for some opinions on this. I'm more than happy to add the entire list of printing flaws to the variations list, but wanted others opinions. I don't have the cards in my collection (other than the Thomas), so scans would be taken from the internet to use as examples. I know sometimes the quality of those isn't as high. I also know that there are a few of you on this board that have hundreds of individual cards from that era. May give you folks a reason to go searching through some cards, and what is more fun that that!
Always looking for baseball variation/error cards and anything Garrett Whitley or Ian Anderson
